James "Jamie" Holcombe Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2023.
James P. "Jamie" Holcombe Jr., 64 of Winthrop passed away on September 23, 2023, surrounded by his loving family after a grueling battle with glioblastoma. He faced his difficult diagnosis with an inner strength and a quiet dignity that surprised nobody who knew him. He lived in Massachusetts for many years but was born in Charleston SC, a city he truly loved and visited frequently throughout the years. He always considered Charleston to be his real home and he was a true Southern gentleman to his core. Jamie was such a kind man and very generous to the people around him, often times paying for the car behind him in the drive thru or an elderly person's groceries just to bring a smile to someone's day, including his own. He enjoyed many things in life but nothing meant more to him than time spent with the friends and family he cared for so deeply, special times that usually included great food, good conversation and wonderful restaurants. He was known for his own culinary skills which were impressive to say the least and his famous clam chowder was always in high demand around the holidays and could rival the best of them. He was also an eloquent writer, responsible for nightstand drawers overflowing with cards and letters he liked to write to the people he loved words far too precious and meaningful to ever be discarded, but saved instead to be read again at another place in time. Jamie's love of friends and family extended to the four legged kind as well. No matter where he went, if there was a dog in the vicinity, it somehow made its way over to him for a belly rub, and Jamie didn't disappoint. They were drawn to him instinctively, somehow sensing his loving nature as only a dog can do and that love was always reciprocated. We can only imagine the race to Heaven's door with Jocko, Bulova and his beloved Butch racing to be the first to greet him. Jamie enjoyed so many different things and was always ready for the next adventure. He loved to travel which was a big part of his life and his job. He loved the ocean and waking up every morning to the salt air and beautiful views that always brought him peace and serenity but never more so than these last few months. He also liked concerts, a great series to binge watch, a good book to read and all things outdoors, but he was his happiest anytime he had a fishing rod in his hand and was out on his treasured boat that brought him endless hours of pleasure. But while fishing brought him so much joy his true passion in life was found at 37000 feet in the air when he was flying an airplane. Jamie spent more than 40 years in the airline industry and flying was in his DNA. He began his airline journey at Piedmont Airlines as a flight attendant but realized the cockpit of the plane was where he belonged. He worked for US Airways when the two companies completed a merger and ended his career as a Captain at JetBlue Airlines where he spent the last 16 years doing what he loved the most, flying airplanes.

He leaves behind his beloved wife and twin flame Merna (Van) who will count the minutes until she is reunited with the love of her life, his children whom he adored Jessica Holcombe and her partner Timothy Kottyan, Taylor Boyle and her husband Keith and Ashley Holcombe and her husband Jonathan Bailey and his cherished granddaughter, Harper Rose Boyle who stole his heart the day she was born. He also leaves his mother Frances (Noonan) Holcombe, two brothers Robert Holcombe and John Holcombe and his wife Brooke, a sister Elizabeth Holcombe, his sister-in-law Marjorie (Van) Finucane and her husband Michael and brother-in-law Jeffrey Van and his wife Debbie as well as his mother in law Lois Van. Jamie was predeceased by his father James Philip Holcombe and his sister Ashley Heath Peters, and also leaves behind many friends and extended family members.

Jamie's life and the tender way he treated people could never be summed up in a paragraph or two but fortunately for those of us who loved him dearly there are pages upon pages written for him in our hearts where he will remain forever. A helping hand or a random act of kindness for someone would truly honor his memory and would be very much appreciated by his loved ones. This more than anything else would capture the generosity of spirit and the grace with which Jamie lived his life. We will honor him at a later date to be announced. Funeral arrangements are from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St. Winthrop, MA. To sign Jamie's guestbook, please visit www.mauricekirbyfh.com.

So sorry to hear he passed. We were heart broken when he told my parents he had the same horrible cancer that my Brother Randy died of. They were close friends, hunting buddies and fellow pilots at Jet Blue. Hope they are both having fun in Heaven.

I still chat with my friends and colleagues at work about Jamie. Every time he comes up in conversation (which is often), people always say "he is a wonderful human being."
You will always be remembered my friend.

We were extremely saddened to hear of Jamie's passing. He was always a lot of fun to work with. I am glad that he found his passion soaring the skies. I always knew he belonged in the cockpit. Jamie was truly a special person and he will be missed. Captain, you can now put out your hand and touch the face of God. Until we meet again, Rest in Peace.

I met Jamie in Ground School at a regional airline we flew at in 2000. It was in Ft. Lauderdale, FL - so we spent a lot of our time studying while sitting in a beach chair, a few feet from the ocean - and stacks and stacks of flash cards. We quickly became friends, and have remained good friends ever since. Even though we usually lived on opposite sides of the country, we went through the `ups-and-downs´ of our lives as if we were next-door neighbors . . . calling each other for advice, a reality check - or just to vent. He was always the voice of reason. His family meant everything to him - his face always lit up when he talked about them. I consider myself to be very fortunate to be his friend - and I will definitely miss him. He left his mark on the world in such a positive way - an in so many different ways. My sympathies go out to Merna, his kids (and grandkid!), and the rest of his family. You´ll be in my prayers. Fly safe, Jamie . . . and thanks for being such a good friend . . .

Growing up as Ashley´s best friend I was beyond blessed with the privilege to meet and be in the presence of Jamie many many times. He always welcomed me with open arms and acted as if I was one of his own. We would always go to eat, or adventure renting a boat. Even though Ashley had to work me and him would still hangout and enjoy our day. He truly is an amazing person and I see so much of him in Ashley. I remember I went on my first ever flight to Florida, with JetBlue I was maybe 15 and nervous! Although he couldn´t be my pilot (I was hoping he would be) he made some calls and made sure I was taken care of on my first flight! They knew who I was the second I checked in. He made me feel safe even though he wasn´t there. Prayers continued for Merna, Ashley, Taylor, Jessica and little Ms. Harper

Jamie was a true Southern gentleman. He was a joy to fly with when we were flight attendants for USAirways. Jamie was our unofficial videographer for our wedding in 1997, we never even asked him, he just did it. After the ceremony, he personally took our two ring doggies back home for us, without even being asked. He was always jovial and a great conversationalist. Bill and I have Merna, Taylor, Ashley Rose and all of his extended family in our thoughts and prayers. May he rest in Eternal Peace forever and ever.

Dear Merna,

I am so sorry to hear of Jamie's passing. I hope you and your entire family find the strength and support to go through this difficult time together.

Jamie and I went through the JetBlue upgrade training as sim partners together. We had an amazing time together in Orlando for those days. He talked about his family a lot and on one occasion he send me a text that was destined for you. It was a selfie of him with the caption "I love you". After I replied , he made sure that you got the text that was for his beloved wife. We had a good laugh about that the next day. It was my great pleasure to get to know him and to spend some time with your husband.

You will be missed my friend

In my early years, Jaime seemed to be my personal commute pilot. I was frequently in the Js which I never turned down when he flew. He always had that smile, we shared many stories both aviation and family life. A true professional, a gentleman and great role model. You will be missed my friend.

Dear Merna,

Christine and I are heartbroken for Jamie, you and your entire family. What a great guy, pilot and husband you had. I´ve known Jamie dating back to US Airways days when I met him when he was a flight attendant on one of my trips when I was based in Boston. He told me that he was building time to advance to a job flying for the majors. Little did I know I would be flying with him at JetBlue several years later.

He was the pilot that coined the term, "the Barnash Maneuver" which is what he named my hand flying all those times I clicked off the autopilot and auto thrust at the top of descent until landing. He was also the last pilot I flew with when I used the automation into Boston on a Cat III approach.

I could not feel more honored when Jamie accepted my request to be my First Officer on my retirement flight on August 19, 2019. We had discussed many times that he needed to upgrade to Captain and that he would make a great one as evidenced by the people that wrote about him here.

Christine and I enjoyed the time we spent with you and Jamie. We know how difficult it was for you and Jamie the last few years, and I value the times we spent together.

We will sorely miss him. If there is anything Christine and I could do, please let´s us know. Jamie and you are in our prayers.

Love, Christine and Al

Jamie was my colleague, a mentor and one of the best most polite political debaters I have ever known.
And yes he was crazy about Harper Rose. Two days after she was born he said to me " I have fallen in love again with being a dad"

Will miss you

I was so sad to hear about Jaime´s passing. We flew often and I always enjoyed the flights and overnights we got to do together. Jamie´s kind and caring approach toward life was so apparent to all that had the privilege to know him. We are all so lucky to have known such a great human being. Blue skies and tailwinds my friend. You will be missed.

I flew with Jamie many times when he was a First officer at jetBlue. He was such a kind gentleman and was a pleasure to fly with. I always looked forward to my trip when I saw I was paired up with him. The news of his passing was a shock to me and I am so sorry for you loss.
The aviation community has lost a fellow brother and more than that a good friend. He will be missed.....

My first time meeting Jamie was in San Francisco on a layover, during the pandemic. We took the service elevator downstairs both seeking a cup of coffee. He was going to have one at the hotel cafe and I said I´m going to Starbucks. He followed and we chatted over our mutual love of Charleston. Then we couldn´t resist talking about our granddaughters. His eyes lit up when he spoke of Harper. He was easy to smile, and laugh! He was BOS based, me JFK, probably wouldn´t give us an opportunity to work together. He was kind, generous (he bought my coffee, even tried my drink). I remember thinking how fortunate it was that Jetblue had a pilot of outstanding character. He will be missed by all who loved him and those of us that briefly interacted with him! He was memorable! Sometimes you just meet a person who cannot be forgotten. Jamie may you rest in peace and I´m quite sure Heaven welcomed you with great joy.

I always loved flying with you as a flight attendant and a pilot. I'll never forget the day you walked out of the cockpit on a JetBlue flight I was randomly taking to see my son. I could not have been more excited to see you that day and I'll always remember that huge hug we shared. The love you and Merna shared was soul mate love. We will all forever be better for having known you. RIP my friend, fly high
