James Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2024.
James Vincent Johnson, known to most as Jim, passed away on June 25, 2024, at the age of 69, in Dayton, Ohio, the same city where he was born on June 21, 1955. Jim's life was marked by his intellectual curiosity, evident from his early education at Shaw Elementary and Beavercreek High School, through to his studies in geology at Wright State University.
Jim's professional journey was largely centered around his culinary expertise and musical skills. He began his career in Dayton, working as a cook and later as a sous chef in various local restaurants and golf clubs. His culinary adventure took him to Colorado, where he further honed his skills in the kitchens of restaurants and private clubs in the Four Corners area. Known for his exceptional cooking, Jim often delighted friends and family with edible gifts, showcasing his mastery of regional flavors and condiments.
Beyond the kitchen, Jim was a man of many interests. A prodigious reader and model maker, he was also a crossword puzzle enthusiast. His passion for gardening, especially propagating native plants, was a testament to his love for the natural world. Jim's musical talents were equally notable; he was a self-taught 5 string banjo player and his knowledge of bluegrass music was recently featured in the book "Industrial Strength Bluegrass." During his lifetime, he played in several bluegrass bands where he gained a reputation as a fine local musician. His personality was further enriched by his sense of humor, seen in his love for playing practical jokes, and his readiness to engage in political discussions or lend a helping hand.
Jim is survived by his sister, Joyellen Paolo of Centerville, Ohio; niece Marybeth Clarke of Harrisonburg, Virginia; nephew Michael J. Heaton of Denver, Colorado; and nieces Melinda Leet of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Melissa Heaton of Highland Heights, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, William T. and Mary (Sharpelletti) Johnson, and his brother, Harold T. Johnson III.
A graveside service will be held later this summer at St. Kateri Preserve, Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio, where family and friends can gather to honor Jim's memory. Trinity Cremation Care located at 510 Business Parkway, Carlisle, OH 45005 is assisting the family during this time. Jim's legacy of knowledge, kindness, music, and culinary artistry will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

I had the joy of knowing Jim from the old-time jam at the Trolley Stop, and it was always a treat to run into him here and there unexpectedly. I will miss his easy-going friendliness, his chuckle, and his companionship in the back row.

Heartbroken. I worked with him at Garden Station in 2016 and we both lived at Jaycee Towers until I moved to South Carolina in 2020.

I am saddened to hear of Jim´s passing. Condolences to the family. I first met Jim at Garden Station. While tending my plot I heard someone playing a banjo and there was Jim sitting in the shade plucking away. We struck up a conversation and talked every time we saw each other at the garden. I always enjoyed our conversations. Once he found out my wife had red cone flowers he had to have some seeds so he rode his bike over to our house to get some. Hopefully those seeds are flourishing somewhere and shining bright for Jim.

I'm heartbroken by this sad news. I will miss our long discussions about every plant we came across. You were a master at growing from seed. You will be very missed my friend.
