James Karner

James "Jim" W. Karner, 84, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on August 15, 2023. He was born on February 20, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois.

Jim was known for his honesty, generosity, and strong work ethic. He worked as a union millwright for JM Foster Construction, specializing in heavy industrial construction in steel mills across the United States and beyond. His dedication and expertise in his field were highly regarded.

Outside of work, Jim found happiness in working in his yard and tending to his garden. He had a green thumb and took pride in nurturing his plants and creating a beautiful outdoor space. He also loved riding his golf cart around his property with his dog, Catie Ju.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Edith Laverne Karner. He had 3 children of whom he was very proud: Nancy Yoder, Cathy (JR) Doyle, and Jim (Tami) Karner. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Cameron (Al) Chan, Bailey, Noah, Elijah Doyle, Alexis, Ayana, and Zoe Karner, and granddaughter-in-law Kim Yoder. Jim was also a proud great-grandfather to Leo and Miles Chan.

In addition to his immediate family, Jim leaves behind his sisters: Joan (late Carl) Towell, Jackie (Carl) Brickley, Jeri (Wayne) Sothman, and his brother Michael (Susan) Mantai. He was preceded in death by his grandson Nick Yoder, his mother Florence Brasich, and his sister Jean Woods.

Jim's kind and giving nature touched the lives of many and he had an extensive network of nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will cherish his memory.

A small, private service will be held on Saturday, August 26th, in Gardendale, Alabama, to honor Jim's life. The family appreciates the love and support during this difficult time.
