James Kovalsky Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2019.
James Howard Kovalsky EWING James H. Kovalsky (Coach K./Mr. K.) passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, at his home with his wife and good friends by his side. He was 71. Born on April 14, 1948, to Gus and Viva Kovalsky, he grew up in Washington, NJ. He graduated from Washington High School in 1966 and Glassboro State College in 1970, majoring in elementary education. Jim and his wife, Eileen (Lovenduski) celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on July 8. Jimmy always said meeting Eileen was the best thing that ever happened to him, calling her Eileen the Good! He enjoyed getting to know the Lovenduski family saying that he needed a scorecard to keep everyone straight! In high school he was a three sport athlete earning two letters in basketball, and four in both football and baseball. On the field few matched his accomplishments in football and baseball. The Newark News (Star Ledger) selected him as the First Team Group II All State Quarterback in 1965, and the First Team Group II All Groups Catcher in 1966. He was voted Most Valuable Athlete in his class. In 1966, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates scout, Bill Weaver, and he was named the Co-MVP of the Mercer County American Legion League. In college he continued to play both football and baseball, lettering three years in football and four years in baseball. He still holds the school's kickoff return record, a 99-yard return against Southern Connecticut. In 1970, he was a tri-captain of the baseball team and the First Team All-NJAC catcher. That same year Frank O'Rourke scouted Jim as a free agent draft pick for the New York Yankees. After graduating college Jimmy served six months active duty with the U.S. Army. Jim started his teaching and coaching career at Antheil Junior High in Ewing, NJ. He was a reading teacher and the last coach of the Antheil Hawks baseball team. He continued his Ewing teaching career at Fisher Junior High and Fisher Middle School. Mr. K. loved teaching the junior high and middle school students. He made a big impact on many lives especially the young men he coached. Many of his students and athletes became lifelong friends and several got to coach with him and against him. During the 1998-99 school year, Jim was named the Teacher of the Year for Fisher in the N.J. State Governor's Teacher Recognition Program. In 1999, he was awarded the Fisher Junior High Golden Apple Award for enthusiasm, attitude and loyalty. He taught for the Ewing Township School District for 34 years, retiring in 2004. In 2002, Jim became a member of the Washington/Warren Hills Wall of Fame. In 2006, he became a member of the Ewing High School Hall of Fame. In 2017, he received the "Nick Gusz" Good Guy Award from the Delaware Valley Chapter National Football Foundation. He loved coaching and was the freshman football coach for 18 years, and the Ewing High JV baseball coach for 23 years. As head coach he continued Ewing's winning tradition in baseball, as his teams qualified for the state tournament in all but two seasons. He finished his coaching career with five straight winning seasons. From 1990 to 2003, he was the Blue Devil's assistant head football coach in charge of the offense and quarterbacks. Coach K. volunteered as a Babe Ruth coach, manager for both J&L Texaco and Larkin's Gulf teams. He was manager of the year in 1979, and in 2000, he was awarded the Babe Ruth "Karl Harder" Award for Outstanding Dedication to Youth Activities. Jim always enjoyed watching sports, but once retired a perfect weekend was attending a high school game on Friday night, another on Saturday afternoon and going to a college game on Saturday night! He loved driving whether a local ride, or going cross country. He was an avid reader of nonfiction and enjoyed World War II history. Jimmy had so many friends because no one was more fun to be with, and no one enjoyed his friends more than he did. He always enjoyed a good time. He was predeceased by his parents, Gus and Viva Kovalsky. He is survived by his wife, Eileen; sister, Janie Smickle; nieces, Laurie Smickle and husband, Eric Comunale; Elaine and Mike Ryno; two grand-nieces, Ella and Brielle Ryno, along with several cousins. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the Princeton Community Church, 2300 Pennington Rd., Pennington 08534. Friends may call at the church Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and again Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jim's name to Multiple Myeloma Program, Dr. Sundar Jagannath, 1470 Madison Ave., 6th Floor, NY, NY 10029. Arrangements are under the direction of Timothy F. Reeg, Funeral Director, Pennington, timreeg.com.

I am so very saddened to hear about the passing of our Coach K. He meant so much to so many throughout the years. Having met Coach K and Eileen at a restaurant not too long ago, he imparted a story about his undertaking of the baseball program at Anthiel in his first year of teaching. He inherited a sorted bunch of athletes who did not have success in the prior years, along with this came a warning not to have such high expectations. Irrespective of the advice, undaunted, Coach K took us on. In a single season, he turned us around from the bottom of the junior school ranks to a contender. Coach K was tough, he put his personality out through us, and we believed. Our affection toward Coach K is centered in at times tough love and genuine care for each of us. There was a purity about it that is not common. Coach K would use a phrase, you out dumbed him to indicate a poor choice that resulted in a positive outcome. To this day, I still use this phrase with my children and those I have coached.
Coach K, thank you for being the man you are to many.

Coach K inspire and molded the character and future of so many Ewing athletes. He had a immeasurable impact on my Baseball career and the two years of Football. He never failed to give his all. His sacrifice did not go unnoticed, and he served as an example carried on by all those he had taught on and off the field. He showed us all how to be a member of a community and teammates. His influence on so many Ewing athletes went so so far beyond the field.

I am incredibly saddened by this news. Jim Kovalsky was the best three sport athlete in high school that I have ever been around. Jim was the quarterback on the football team, the point guard on the basketball team and the catcher on the baseball team...and he was tremendous at every sport. The guy was a born leader and he ran the show...from QB to point guard to catcher. My first hand experience with Jim was at the varsity baseball level. Coach Joe Steinhardt had selected me as a freshman to pitch on the varsity. First game I get called in to pitch is with the bases loaded and, of course, Jim Kovalsky behind the plate. Unknown to me at the time, Jim had a pick off signal for the guy on second base with the shortstop. All I wanted to do was throw a strike, but Jim gave me a pitchout sign, a pitch that I had never thrown before. And, after the pitch, I still hadn't thrown a pitchout. I grooved one down the middle and the batter hit a triple. While the guy was rounding the bases, Jim spent some time with me on the mound demanding to know why the pitchout sign was missed. It was not a pleasant experience for a 14 year old. But Jim demanded the best from everyone on the team and after one pitch in my varsity career, I was 0 for 1. But it didn't end there. We were playing West Morris later in the season and I got called in to pitch with their cleanup hitter coming to the plate, a guy his teammates called "The Mick"...apparently after the great Mickey Mantle who was playing for the Yankees at the time. After warmups, Jim came to the mound with the ball and said "I want you to bean this guy", and he turned around and headed back to home plate. Needless to really say, I did not bean the guy...I wasn't that good, but I did thrown inside and get him off the plate. No yelling session after this event...so I deemed it successful. I am certain that Jim will be remembered as a demanding leader who always put his very best in to everything he did. He will be missed. God bless Jim Kovalsky and his family. May he rest in peace.

I had Mr. K in Fisher Jr HS for a few classes in the 90s. He was one of the best teachers in my lifetime. He would always relate to us in any way he could while teaching us about the world around us. Thank you Coach, you will be missed and remembered.

Jim and I were child-hood friends and charter members of the "Grand Avenue Boys"in Washington Boro. I have many fond memories of times spent with Jim during our youth and through our college years. He was a great athlete and a really good guy. Although I didn't keep close tabs with Jim through the years, I did enjoy running into him from time to time, generally at a high school football game somewhere. Rest in Peace Old Friend, and my deepest sympathy to Jim's wife, family and other friends.

When I was a chubby ninth grader trying out for football, Coach K inspired me and treated me with respect. He told me football was about heart and effort not necessarily speed and strength. He also taught me what it was to be a leader and I wouldn't be where I am in life without him. Thanks Coach see you on the other side

Went to school and graduated with Jim from Washington High Class of 1966. He was a great athlete and a very intelligent man. He had a very good attitude and a wonderful smile. Sending my prayers for his family & friends for comfort and peace. RIP Jim

I feel the need to express my condolences on Jim's passing, although I only know of him from reading this glowing obituary. What an accomplished life! I am sure that he was truly a joy to be around.

What most prompted me to write was the final paragraph.

My mother also had Multiple Myeloma and was treated by Dr Jagganath.
Although my mother passed nine years ago, I still have fond memories of Dr Jagganath's visits, conversations and care.

I hope that your family had similar experiences.

Again, my sympathies for your loss,
Jo Marie Gray
