James McClung Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2011.
James Rowland McClung 1933 -2011 It took twenty years for a nonmalignant, but very invasive, brain tumor to get the better of Jim on March 28, 2011. His wife of 46 years, Shirley, and his children Lisa and Josh with his wife Sharon and their baby daughter, Taylor will miss him very much. He was also much loved by his sister, Jeannine McClung and his brother and sister-in-law Tom and Yvonne McClung. Jim was born in McCook, Nebraska to Dorothy Susan Rowland and Elmer James McClung. His father died when Jim was six and a few years later his mother remarried and the family moved to Santa Cruz, CA. Jim graduated from Santa Cruz High and attended Hartnell College in Salinas where he was proud to be a guard on the team in their Junior Rose Bowl game. He was awarded a Life Pass for himself and a guest to all of the college's events. After college, he joined the Marines and served for nine years which included a tour in Korea at the war's end. After his service, Jim worked for Pac Bell, later AT&T, until his retirement. Jim was always willing to help children and his community. He coached soccer at Coleman Elementary, created stage sets for the annual Operatunity at Davidson Middle School, worked with the PTA at San Rafael High and served as Treasurer on the board of the Bret Harte Association. Jim also volunteered with The Friends of Hospice North for many years. Perhaps you would consider a donation to: Hospice By The Bay, 17 East Sir Francis Drake, Larkspur, 94939. Arrangements have been made with the Neptune Society. A family gathering has been held in his memory. Semper Fi, Honey

I am not related to Jim McClung; however I regard Shirley and Jim as family. My daughter, Sharon, is married to Josh McClung. I was apprehensive before meeting Shirley and Jim for the first time, because I was told that Jim does not talk to everyone. As luck would have it, both Shirley and Jim quickly warmed up to us igniting the spark of a great friendship.
We visited the McClungs in San Rafael, and Jim drove us all over San Francisco proudly showing us the sites. Jim even took us to his favorite coffee house – an act of accepting us into his life.
He liked to talk about professional football, a sport that I have followed since my childhood – my late father having been an ardent N.Y. Giants fan. I enjoyed hearing about Jim’s ealy days in Nebraska.
I will miss his smile and kind-hearted nature. Jim lives on in his beautiful, kind, talented and personable children Josh and Lisa. I am thankful that Jim and an opportunity to meet and hold the granddaughter that we share – Taylor Lyn McClung.
I am fortunate to have spent both Thanksgiving and Christmas 2010 with Shirley and Jim. During the Thanksgiving holiday, Jim shared both his corned beef and his famous chili recipe with me. He knew that I enjoyed cooking. I was honored by the gift of those recipes.

Shirley, Lisa, Jeannine & the entire McClung family, We are very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was a wonderful man, full of life, great stories, and love for his family. We always looked forward to his visits here at our dental office, and considered him a very big part of our extended dental family. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
