NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Rev. James J. McGrath, C.S.C., 84, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, Ind. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016. He was born on October 30, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York to John J. and Anna Grace (Branigan) McGrath. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Grade School and St. John's Preparatory School. In 1946, at the age of 14, he entered Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame as a freshman. After graduation in 1950, and a year in the Novitiate, he made his First Vows on August 16, 1951, he studied theology at Holy Cross College, Washington, D.C., and was ordained to the priesthood in St. Augustine's Cathedral, Bridgeport, CT, June 5, 1959. During several summers he had studied at Notre Dame in order to earn a master's degree in botany. Following a year's pastoral apprenticeship at Notre Dame, Fr. McGrath pursued doctoral studies at the University of California, where he obtained a doctorate in botany in 1965. Fr. McGrath taught at Notre Dame from 1965 until 2003 as a Professor of Biology, and he was Assistant Chair of the Biology Department. He taught Plant Taxonomy, Plant Anatomy, Biological Micro technique and a class for non-science majors, Plants, Food and Society. Fr. McGrath also spent many hours caring for the biology greenhouse. One of Fr. McGrath's last official acts in the Biology Department was signing off on, and approving the design, of the new Biology Department greenhouse which is now part of the Jordan Science Building. In 2008, Fr. McGrath was presented an award commemorating his years of service (1965-2003), to the Notre Dame Biological Science Department. A bronze plaque hangs at the entrance to the greenhouse with his name and honorary title of, "Keeper of the Plants." Over the years, Fr. McGrath was teacher to many Notre Dame students. He also served as Chaplain to the Notre Dame Fire Department where he also resided for 20 years. Fr. McGrath's duties went beyond the campus as he spent his weekends ministering at local parishes; one in particular, Sacred Heart of Mary Missionary Parish in Dowagiac, Michigan. Every weekend, Fr. McGrath would drive up to Michigan to celebrate Mass until he was assigned to Holy Cross House in 2005. Preceding him in death are his parents, John J. and Anna Grace McGrath; sisters, Rosemary (McGrath) Monahan and Delores (McGrath) McClellan; and nephew, Douglas McClellan. He is survived by a sister, Thérése McGrath, as well as several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, October 30, 2016, at Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, IN, where there will be a Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame campus on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in the community cemetery at Notre Dame. My love for Father McGrath will never diminish. I met him years ago as a Corby Girl. I served him dinner at Corby Hall and my hands would shake as I poured is coffee. He was so kind and gentle and never was sharp with me. I eventually moved to head table and served Father Hesburgh all because Father Jim helped me gain confidence. Father remained close to the Corby girls through his life. He helped us all grow into strong faithful women. Watching him at the end was difficult but we knew he would soon be with the God he so loved. Thank you Father Jim. Your picture is on my refrigerator to this day.

We agree with all of these comments about Fr. McGrath. Such a wonderful man associated with our Sacred Heart of Mary parish. He officiated at our daughter's wedding, and co-officiated at our son's wedding up in Petoskey, MI. He always reminded us that he loved Petoskey and opened his eyes to such beautiful territory where he had never been. Many Christmases we also received a magnet of our family Christmas photo card we had given him. Very thoughtful man! We attended his wake this past Sunday at ND. May he rest in peace with God.

Such a wonderful man who always passed his blessings onto others. Fr. McGrath presided over my wedding and the baptism of my son. You will be forever missed, Fr.

My family had a summer place out at twin lakes on big twin. We always looked forward to Sunday mass. I remember one weekend during a summer, my friends Jennifer McClenahan, Deanna Beneke and I stayed in his guestroom at his apartment in the firehouse on campus at Notre Dame. It has always been and always remain one of my fondest memories. He was a wonderful man and priest. There simply are not enough words to describe how special he was and he will be missed fiercely.

Such a wonderful priest and wonderful with our family at Sacred Heart of Mary! All of our children spent time at ND enjoying the whole campus for many years because of Father McGrath! He enjoyed his many years in Michigan! And we were so lucky to have him at our parish! Am so glad he is at peace with our heavenly Father!!!

Dear Terry I am so sorry for the loss of such a great man as your brother.I remember the first time I poured coffee for him and my hands shook. He was so kind and gentle with me as my hands shook and thus started a life long friendship and mutual respect. His intelligence was astonishing. His Godliness and holiness even more amazing and uplifting. It was a gift from God to know him.I will attend the mass and hope to exchange a hug in his honor. Mary Ann Corby Girl

JJ always made himself available to those students willing to accept his outreach. He always thought of others first and worked tirelessly in his niche as a member of the University's Biology Department. I was fortunate to be among those who received his generous concern and assistance since I first encountered him as my dorm rector in 1969. May he enter into the Lord's eternal rest which he so richly earned.

For many years, Fr. McGrath served as a weekend priest at Sacred Heart in Sister Lakes, MI, where he inspired me to pursue a career in science, as well as, develop my faith and service to our little parish. Both of these purposes have now led me to be a science teacher for catholic schools and combine the love of science and God in one's life. Fr. McGrath also officiated my wedding because I considered him my pastor and influential teacher. May he now find a peaceful rest with Jesus, while still being inspired by wonderful flora.
