Died peacefully in his sleep, on Sunday, December 23, 2018. Jim was born on November 10, 1930, in Homestead, PA, a son of John J. and Margaret G. McLean. He was a graduate of Homestead High School (1948), the University of Notre Dame (1952) and University of Pittsburgh Law School (1955). Jim practiced law and was Solicitor of Allegheny County. He was the Mayor of Bethel Park (1979-1983) and served as a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County (1984-2000). Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Honorable John J. McLean. Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carolyn K. McLean; his three children, James McLean (Regina), David McLean (Judy) and Kathleen Cerrone (Marc); 11 grandchildren, Jason (Lauren), Connor (Lisa), Owen and Sarah McLean, Jennifer (Ryan) Morgan, Allison (Robert) Lane, David (Laura), Meghan and Susan McLean, Grant and Amanda Cerrone; and 12 great-grandchildren, Emerson, Clara, Liana, Nola, Evander, Evelyn, Camden, Havey, Carlyn, Paxton, Calum and Christian. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Louise de Marillac Church, 320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair, PA on Friday, December 28, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment will be private. Arrangements made by JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Holy Cross Association, P.O. Box 771, Notre Dame, IN 46556-0771 or to Friendship Village of South Hills, 1290 Boyce Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15241. Please send condolences to www.johnfslater.com.

I had the privilege of working as a law clerk for Judge McLean in the 1990s. I was so lucky to learn so much from him. He taught me how to be a good lawyer. Even more, he taught me how to be a good person. His wisdom and temperament were exemplary. He was a great man.
