JAMES NEARY Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 7, 2021.
NEARY--James "Jimmy". Jimmy Neary, 91, Iconic New York City Irish Restauranteur James ("Jimmy") Neary was born of humble means on September 14, 1930 in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, Ireland. Having immigrated to America at age 24, he rose to become a NYC legend from his famed restaurant, "Neary's," on East 57th Street. Jimmy began his career as a porter at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) in 1954, where he later became the first former employee to become a member and was later honored as 'Irishman of the Year' in March 2013. He also worked as a bartender at P.J. Moriarty's prior to opening Neary's. From its beginning on St. Patrick's Day in 1967, Neary's restaurant became a "go to" spot for the famous and well-known, including high-ranking politicians, religious leaders, television personalities, famed authors, sports icons and a cross section of NYC's finest. Neary's is one of the last of the old world NYC restaurants. Jimmy, always dapper in his dress, prided himself in maintaining a more formal and elegant environment at Neary's. Sutton Place residents often referred to Jimmy as the best dressed man on 57th Street. He was also known for treating everyone with the same care and respect, from the neighbor next door to the President of the United States. Jimmy insisted on his customers having the ultimate dining experience, which included sharing his countless stories, jokes and description of past experiences. Some of Jimmy's favorites include: purchasing the building on East 57th Street in 1986; taking his dream trip with Mayor Michael Bloomberg to his hometown of Tubbercurry; having his famous lamb chops regularly mentioned by Kathie Lee Gifford on television; appearing as himself in over 25 books by the esteemed author, Mary Higgins Clark; receiving his 1986 and 1990 New York Giants Super Bowl rings from Tim Mara; and describing the history of his pocket watch, one of only two in the world, which was gifted to him by Colonel Anthony Story, General Douglas MacArthur's private pilot, entitling the holder to a lifetime pass to Ebbets Field. Part of the magic of Neary's was Jimmy's love of life, celebrating his Irish heritage, and his love of America, having served as a tank driver in the U.S. Army in 1956. On special occasions, including Jimmy's "annual" surprise birthday party, customers would be entertained by song, music and Irish step dancing. Many of these moments are captured in a documentary entitled: "Neary's: The Dream at the End of the Rainbow." Jimmy was always present at the restaurant. He greeted every customer with his warm, Irish welcome and his bigger-than-life smile. Jimmy created an environment where everyone felt at home and a part of the family, whether you were a regular or first-time visitor. Because of that, he had a large and loyal clientele, including some frequenting Neary's for over 50+ years. Those same qualities engendered the loyalty of his staff, many of whom have been at the restaurant over 30, 40 and 50 years. Jimmy's successes in NYC would not have been possible without the love and support of his beautiful and devoted wife, Eileen (nee Twomey), who was from The Ward, Co. Dublin, Ireland, and who was by his side for 40 years before she passed away in January 2007. They raised their four children, Patrick, Una, Ann Marie and Eileen, in Demarest, New Jersey, all of whom received a strong Catholic upbringing and education from grammar school through college. Both devout Catholics, Jimmy and Eileen were daily communicants. Jimmy, Eileen and family were parishioners at St. Joseph's Parish in Demarest, New Jersey and the Society of African Missions in Tenafly, New Jersey, where Jimmy was a daily lector. Most recently, Jimmy was a parishioner at Holy Trinity Church in NYC. Jimmy and Eileen were both invested into the Eastern Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. In October 2019, Jimmy was promoted in rank to Knight Commander with Star. When not in the restaurant, Jimmy enjoyed quality time with his extended family, which includes his daughter-in-law, Adriana (Neary), and sons-in-law, Chip (Bergwall), Tracy (Bowers) and Tom (Riggs), and his eight adoring grandchildren, Briana, Sofia and Patrick (Neary), Ryan, Danny and Matthew (Bergwall), and Gavin and Christina (Bowers). He also loved spending time with the newest family member, Riley, his black Labrador. Jimmy's sole surviving in-law, Veronica (nee-Twomey) Lee, resides in North Reading, Massachusetts. He is also survived by 22 beloved nieces and nephews. Jimmy is pre- decreased by his parents, Patrick and Catherine (nee Marren), his brothers, Monsignor Tom, John, Micael and Patrick, and his sister, Una Sheehan. He is also predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Brian Sheehan, Patrick Lee, Father Dermot Twomey, Patrick Twomey and Lawrence Barbour, and sisters-in-law, Mary (Fitzpatrick) Neary, Mary Neary, Maureen Suckling, Kathleen Barbour and Phyllis Twomey, and loving niece, Kathleen Tormey. They broke the mould when they made Jimmy. An Irish immigrant who embodied the American dream and who strongly valued his faith, family and country. He lived every moment as if it was his last. As he always said "I love this life" and he did. May he Rest In Eternal Peace. The family of James "Jimmy" Joseph Neary welcomes all friends to a public visitation/ viewing on Thursday, October 7 and Friday, October 8 from 4pm-9pm (both days) at Frank E. Campbell, The Funeral Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Navy SEAL Foundation (navyfoundation.org) or Tunnel to Towers (t2t.org); two veterans/first responder charities that our father supported.

With sincere condolences to all the Neary's and the extended family on your recent loss. He was a true gentleman. We had a common friend in his partner Brian, resulting in his extending the courtesy of giving me a tour of his premises on my visit to NYC. May he rest in peace.

So grateful to have had Jimmy as a friend and neighbor -- both up north and down south! Condolences to Una and the Neary family and to the "Neary's" family, as well. Jimmy was the "Iconic" Irish restauranteur, who made us all feel like family. He will be missed.

I have been so deeply touched since hearing about the passing of Jimmy Neary. Feels like a family member, I will no longer be able to see. I never met his dear Eileen but heard from my parents how in love they were and hope you have solace knowing they are in each others arms.
It's been too long since I have been in the city but so often have looked forward to dinner at Neary's.
What Jimmy Neary created with his wonderful nature and ability to make everyone feel welcome and important was a family. I am blessed to have so many beautiful memories there with my family, Barbara and Paul, my children, grand-children, brothers and nieces and nephews. Neary's is a most special place to all of us and we have such fond feelings for everyone there.
Rest in peace Jimmy Neary and may your memory be a blessing to all...

A coincidence today. I was visiting my sister in law who was married to my brother Andrew Neary. They lived in San Luis Obispo and met a Monsignor Tom Neary. This was probably late 1960s. Would that have been your Dad´s brother? Just thought I´d pass this on. Blessings, Margaret Neary

Jimmy Neary was one of the lovliest people I have ever met. When you walked into Neary's Pub you were greeted like a celebrity even if you weren't one. And there were many celebrities at Neary's ... the biggest one was Jimmy! Whenever I was at Neary's I felt like family. He was the mayor of 57th Street. Jimmy will be sorely missed. They should name 57th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues Jimmy Neary Way. He certainly deserved that honor!

My late husband Michael, was a regular at Neary's back in the early 1970's. Michael was born in Dublin, loved going to Neary's and loved Jimmy. Jimmy was the first person Michael told when I was pregnant with our first child, Kate. Maggie, Kate's sister and I visited Neary's in March of 2019 and showed Jimmy the note Michael had written in telling Jimmy. My deep sympathy and prayers to Jimmy's family. He will be sorely missed.

I first met Jimmy on St Patrick´s Day in 1973 when I took my parents Thomas Neary, Castlebar, and Margaret Neary, Cork, and my baby son, Stuart, for dinner. My parents had just visited a sister in PA. and it was a treat for them to meet Jimmy and see if we had a blood connection. Not sure if we ever determined that we did as there are only two Neary families in Ireland. I was born in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow.
As true to character, Jimmy came to our table and reminisced with possible cousins.
So sorry to hear of his passing but he is well received in heaven as my parents and many siblings are there too. God Bless, Margaret Neary

My dear friend Olivia McManus Gross, the first woman manager of a private club in NYC (The Marco Polo club at the Waldorf-Astoria) loved Jimmy Neary. She was a Connemara native and they shared a common history of emigration. I had the joy of being with the two of them at Neary´s on several occasions. An irreplaceable human being, NY will not see the likes of Jimmy Neary again. He is now with God and heaven is all the better for it. A perpetually happy and warm individual, may his family and staff be comforted by the wonderful, full life he led.

A wonderful man and a great friend to many. The poet Shelly said it best when asked to explain a friend -- a dear balm; a smile among dark frowns; a beloved light. "A solitude, a
refuge, a delight"
May he rest in peace with Eileen.
My condolences to the entire family.

So sorry to hear this news. I only had the chance to dine at his place once, in NYC from Arkansas to visit with a friend who's family truly knew how special Jimmy and Neary's is. He was a true host and made us all feel like we were there for family dinner and good stories. Thanks for sharing part of you life and your father with us.

It was an honor to know Jimmy Neary..He was a legend in our family. My late uncle Bernie (The Jeweler) Karasick was a steady customer for over forty years and became part of the Neary family. How thrilled I was to have been at Neary's the night before his 91st birthday, just a few weeks ago and together with a group of "Jimmy fans" sing Happy Birthday and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" to him. Those Irish eyes of Jimmy are now smiling in heaven. May this wonderful, kind soul rest in eternal peace. Corey Breier for the Karasick and Breier families.

My husband and I watched a PBS documentary about Neary's. We decided the next time we were in Manhattan, we would check it out.
We arrived at Neary's and were seated. A few moments later Jimmy arrived and welcomed us to his resturant. Unbeknowst to us the producer of the documentary was sitting next to us. Jimmy of course introduced us. And so began our love for Neary's and Jimmy.
I believe the world is a better place because of Jimmy Neary. He will be genuinely missed and I feel blessed that I was able to meet this extraordinary man. He made everyone feel welcomed and always had a great story to share.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O'Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

I will miss Jimmy's warm greetings. My little corner of NYC, quite literally, is a bit dimmer.

A favourite memory: when I asked Jimmy if he would consider allowing a Scottish organization to hold a St Andrew's Day dinner at Neary's. He had 2 things to say:
1: I could NEVER close for my regulars
2. I will NEVER allow pipes to be played in my restaurant

COVID had me praying that he would reopen and sadly, I hadn't gotten to eat there to date since reopening due to the loss of my Dad, but I will be there when it reopens and raise a glass in Jimmy's memory.

Rest well with the angels.

Jimmy Neary was a true legend. Warm, friendly gentleman that made everyone feel special. Even after we moved out of state and brought our son back for his 21st birthday Jimmy immediately recognized us and treated us like long lost family. Our favorite restaurant in NYC ,with impeccable service and the best lamb chops ever but I looked forward to seeing Jimmy´s smiling face most of all. I remember his children all working there on holidays and Una telling me Jimmy didn´t raise any stupid children. Such a wonderful family. Please accept my most sincere sympathy, your father was a special man to many people.

Una,
Oh how many wonderful nights I spent at Nearys with the twinkling eyes leading the welcoming walk to our table. Bernie Karasick was my dinner date on many occasions along with Jane and Bob Hale. And so many of your Dads friends.
I remember Maureen O´Hara, Jake LaMotta,Cy Coleman, and myriads more!!
He will be missed by ALL who had the pleasure of meeting him
My heart goes out to you and your entire family

Una and family I am so sorry for the loss of your father! What a happy smiling welcoming man!
I have many memories of your Dad and Neary´s when I used to come in with my Mom Maryanna and Bernie Karasik.
I met Jake Lamotta there one LATE night. Your Dad brought him to our table, brought me a cordless phone and Jake called a friend of mine at 2 in the morning. Jake was my friends idol.
Every time I visited New York I would bring my friends to Neary´s!
I always thought Jimmy was the epitome of a cute Irish Leprechaun! I always felt like part of the family and your Dad was my grandfather!
He and his smiling face will be sorely missed!
Thoughts and prayers for all of you!

I often made a day trip to NYC so I could have my lamb chop dinner at Neary´s and see Jimmy the smiling owner who made everyone feel special.
He affectionly called me the Pennsylvanian. What a lovely gentleman everyone who got to meet him was certainly blessed
I am sure he is smiling down on us
with those twinkling IRISH eyes that gave a loving feeling to everyone who was lucky enough to have known him.
Bless your heart Jimmy I was a lucky one
