James Pfister

James N. "Sparks" Pfister, 79, of Leesburg, Florida, formerly of Massachusetts and California, passed away on February 17, 2025, with his wife and devoted caregiver, Myrtle, by his side.

Jim had a lifelong passion for astronomy and delighted in hosting "star parties," sharing his knowledge with friends, family, church groups, and civic organizations. A dedicated Boston Red Sox fan, he also found great joy in baseball.

At the age of 15, Jim earned his Amateur Radio License, launching a career in communications that spanned decades. His work took him around the world aboard military vessels in service to the country, commercial ships in the U.S. Merchant Marine, and an AT&T cable-laying vessel. Known by his ham radio call sign "NS1L," Jim organized blood drives for the Red Cross and participated in numerous ham radio competitions, earning awards and connecting with people across the globe.

One of Jim's most memorable experiences was his role in coordinating the rescue of the MS Prinsendam carrying over 500 people , with no loss of life or serious injury, on October 4, 1980. As a radio operator aboard the oil tanker Williamsburg, he helped coordinate the response when the cruise ship suffered an engine fire and became stranded in the Gulf of Alaska. Amidst 25-foot swells and 50-knot winds, over 150 survivors were airlifted to safety in one hour, by the Coast Guard, aboard the Williamsburg during what became known as a "miracle rescue."

Jim is survived by his wife of 23 years, Myrtle; his adult children; grandchildren; cousins; many friends; and his beloved cat, Lady, whom he adopted from a humane society.

In accordance with Jim's wishes, no services will be held. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to a rescue group to help save a life-an act that brought Jim immeasurable joy. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
