James Scannell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2022.
James M. Scannell, age 56 of Utica NY and Worcester MA, passed away on May 13, 2022 at St. Luke's Hospital in Utica from complications of a stroke.
Jim was born and raised in Worcester, son of Edward W. Scannell Jr. and Amelia F. (Rutana) Scannell. He was a 1983 graduate of Burncoat Senior High School. He graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont. He then earned his master's degree in English from the University of Virginia and his doctorate in English literature at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Jim was a tenured professor at Utica University in Utica, where he taught English literature for over twenty years. He loved teaching, and he was well liked by his students and highly respected by his colleagues. On Jim's passing Utica University President Laura Casamento stated, "With his boundless humor, intelligence, and humanity, he was truly one of our guiding lights."
Jim most enjoyed being friend, confidant, companion and loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. He tried never to miss their games, plays, recitals, graduations and other school events, and he did not miss many. He was a caring and loving brother. He loved hiking, walking and cross-country skiing. Jim enjoyed cooking and trying new places to eat. He liked watching movies and TV shows, especially with his "families" in Worcester and Milton.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Edward Jr. and Amelia Scannell, formerly of Worcester. He was a devoted son, taking care of both his father and mother when they were ill later in their lives. He is survived by his brothers, sister and sisters in law: Thomas and Deborah Scannell of Worcester, Paul and Angela Scannell of Milton MA, Rev. Ann Scannell of Worcester, Edward III and Alison Scannell of Goshen NY, and John and Doreen Scannell of West Boylston MA. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Stephen, Geoffrey, Caroline, William, Katherine, Keara, Renny, Samuel, Sydney, Matthew, Brian, Sean, Jillian, and grandniece Neva. He also leaves several close friends in Utica.
Jim passed way too young. He had so much more to do, enjoy, experience, share and give.
The funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 24, at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Massachusetts Audubon Society, 208 South Great Road, Lincoln, MA 01773 (www.massaudubon.org).

It seems as if he is just around the corner. This year I donated the always eagerly welcomed Beverage Break at the Annual College English Conference in Jim's memory.

I took one of his English courses during the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic took a significant toll on me; I was sick and struggling with depression, leaving me behind on my coursework. When explaining my situation, Professor Scannell showed me the utmost kindness and understanding. He accommodated me and allowed me to work at my own pace, even though he didn't have to. He could've just told me, "oh well tough luck," and failed me, but no, he showed me grace during a tough time, and I will forever be grateful. May Professor James Scannell rest in peace.

What wonderful thoughts and memories you all have shared. Appreciated so very much. My brother Paul even used some of these very thoughtful messages in his eulogy at his Jim´s funeral mass. I´m glad he touched so many in his work and his life. He surely is happy that he did. Jim´s brother, Tom.

Dear Scannell family,
The world has lost a beautiful soul, a brilliant mind. Our friendship was the most significant of my college years.
So sorry for your loss,
Molly

"His high noon held all the freshness of the morning, and he died then, never knowing defeat, or disillusionment or death of any more of those he loved." John Buchan. But still too soon, too soon.

I mourn the untimely passing of a fine colleague at Utica. The class he taught during his job interview with us was the best such class I have ever seen.

I knew Jim mainly through NYCEA. NYCEA was my first US-based conference, and it became a HUGE factor in shaping the kind of scholar and colleague that I try to be. Jim was a major part of that. Regardless of how busy he was or how many responsibilities he took on, he always had time to help out grad students who presented at NYCEA. He was a mentor when I was a grad student, a model as a colleague, and I will miss his wit and good humor.

Professor Scannell was my professor and later my colleague. I am very sad to hear this news. As his student he taught me not to settle. His courses were challenging yet fun. I have many fond memories of the class discussions we had, and I will sorely miss his presence on campus. My condolences to his family.

This man single-handedly made the biggest impact on me as an educator at UC, now Utica University. While most students found his courses difficult, myself included, each semester I made sure to pick up one of his because he always challenged me to be a better thinker and push my limits. I wouldn´t be the English teacher I am today if it weren´t for his guidance. I´m heartbroken at this news.

Mr. Scannell made a huge difference in my educational experience at Utica College. I returned to school as an older student. I wasn´t sure I could do it. He convinced me I could. I´m forever grateful.
