JAMES WHITTEN Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jun. 24, 2011.
WHITTEN, James W. Jr. "Wally," 50, of Richmond, passed away June 21, 2011 suddenly of natural causes. He is survived by his children, Grace Wallace Whitten and James Philip Whitten; his dog, Sam; his parents, James W. Whitten Sr. and Sara Jo Whitten; his sister, Gray W. Maher and her husband, Chip; his brother, Miles H. Whitten and his wife, Christen; and nieces and nephews, Sarah, Jimmy and Mac Whitten, Amelia, Ella and Brody Thomas, and Whitten Maher. Wally graduated from Blue Ridge School and attended Ferrum College. He worked for 27 years in his family business, Whitten Lincoln-Mercury. He was a lover of animals and people and a friend to all. He never met a stranger. He was an amateur musician and an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved lacrosse and was a youth lacrosse coach. Wally's joy in life was simply a home full of friends and family, hugs and laughter from his children, and a lick from his beloved dog, Sam. He was a very gentle soul and will be missed by us all. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church on Forest Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2727 Enterprise Parkway, Suite 104, Richmond, Va. 23294.

To the Whitten family: My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. Wally was one of the nicest, happiest, friendliest people I knew at Ferrum. Whenever i think of the fun times we had it always brings a smile to my face. You couldn't meet or be around a better person. No one was ever more down to earth.
