Janet Birmingham Firth

West Point - Janet Birmingham Firth passed away on January 16, 2021 with loved ones by her side after a 3 ½ year battle with cancer and dementia. She was born May 5, 1945 in West Point, GA to John H and Lavelle Birmingham both Navy Veterans.

Upon moving to Arizona with her family in 1954 Janet attended Griffith Elementary School, North Phoenix High School and graduated from ASU in the Department of Education. She was a lifelong teacher in Phoenix, St. Louis and Pasadena. Educating children, especially in math was her greatest joy until retirement. That joy was only surpassed by time spent with her beloved grandchildren. She performed in several community plays and was an avid mahjong player. She enjoyed reading books, doing puzzles and crocheting. Janet loved life and was a caring friend. Her compassion and positivity were evidenced by her radiant smile.

Janet is survived by her husband of nearly 15 years, Bob Firth (who she first met in the 4th grade); her son Charles Helmer (Caren) of Arizona; her daughter Cynthia Chylinski (Patrick) of San Gabriel, CA; her sister Carol Birmingham Reiley (Dennis) of Arizona a brother Thomas Birmingham; her grandchildren: Jackson (13) and Piper (11) Chylinski and Ethan (20) and Grayson (17) Badere; two aunts from Alabama; nieces, a nephew, and cousins. Her passing has left a huge void in our family that will never be filled. We will miss her beauty and grace and her ever-positive attitude of never giving up. A private family Celebration of Life will be held. We love you to the moon and back.

Janet, we shared friendship in grade school, high school and later as retired grownups. What fun we had! We shared our home with you and Bob on many occasions. Seeing former Griffith friends was a great pleasure. I will miss your celebration of life but will be thinking of you. You will never be forgotten. With love, Pam (Larry, too).
