Janice Mahood Obituary

Janice H. Mahood (1940-2025)

Janice H. Mahood, 84, of Marlborough, MA, and formerly of Wells, ME, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025. Born in Hempstead, NY, in 1940, Jan's lifelong passion for sailing and the beach was cultivated during her childhood summers in Southold, Long Island, and later on Shelter Island, NY. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Syracuse University, where she served as president of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and forged lasting friendships that she treasured throughout her life.

In 1963, Jan married her college sweetheart, Gary Mahood, with whom she built a life filled with love and adventure. Together, they moved from Locust Valley, NY, to Richmond, VA, to Chicago, IL, and eventually returned to Long Island. Along the way, Jan balanced her devotion to family with her love of writing, particularly on subjects related to dogs. She earned numerous accolades for her work, including the Dog Writers Association of America's award for Best Individual Feature in an All-Breed Magazine in 1996, and the APDW Arthur F. Jones Award for Excellence in 2008.

Jan's professional journey began as a reporter for the Hartford Times and Richmond News Leader. She later worked for Prairie Farmer Magazine and, in 1980, joined Cablevision, where she had the privilege of working alongside Chuck Dolan during the early days of the cable TV industry. Jan also took great pride in her editorial work for McGraw-Hill, Barron's, and the American Kennel Club (AKC). In 1988, she furthered her education by earning an MBA from Adelphi University.

A devoted member of her faith, Jan attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Cold Spring Harbor and, later, St. Paul's Anglican Church in Portland, ME. She was a passionate advocate for the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and dedicated much of her time to raising awareness and support for its use.

Jan's deep love for her family, her dogs, and her church community will remain a cherished legacy. She is survived by her daughter, Scott Cipolla of Boston, MA; her son, Grant Mahood; and many beloved friends and family members. Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Mahood, who passed in 2007.

My condolences to Scott and Grant on the loss of their mother. I will always remember her as Mrs. Mahood as I was introduced to her as Mrs. Mahood when I was a very young child.  That was a time when I traveled to Shelter Island to visit her and her husband Gary with my parents.  I have fond memories of swimming in her pool and the nearby ocean.  I later remember her generous offer as the consummate hostess she was to host my baby shower in her Maine home. Her life and her graciousness throughout my lifetime will always remain in my heart and memory. Good Bye Mrs. Mahood!

Jan and I were friends for 50 years. She was an amazing person, astute business woman, talented writer, dog lover, champion of the Book of Common Prayer, among many other things. We shared stories, experiences, laughs and tears. I love you dear friend! You will be missed. Good-bye for now.

My dear mom. Times have changed since my mom worked at newspapers, it's all digital now. My brother and I worked on this together and included her favorite photo with our beautiful dog Kipper. This is when we lived in Elmhurst, IL the childhood town of my dad and uncle. Good times! I'll be posting more photos here in the future, as well as more memories.
