Janis Nurnberger (Matthews) Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 3, 2025.
OBITUARY:

Janis L. Matthews (Nurnberger) of Gorham, ME (formally of Woburn, MA) passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 after a short but brave battle with cancer. Janis was born on February 4,1952 at the Choate Memorial Hospital in Woburn, Ma to Danial J Matthews and Katharine G (Pigott) Matthews. She was the beloved mother of Renee (Nurnberger) Cyr, she was seventy-two years of age.

Born and raised in Woburn, she attended schools there graduating from Woburn High School, class of 1970, she spent many years working for Electronized Chemicals, on an assembly line in Burlington, Stonemarketing in Cambridge where she worked in data entry, Rainin Instruments in Woburn, where she ran the computer room. She then became a full time care taker to her two best friends, her Mom and Dad.

She has lived in Gorham, ME for the past 5 years and loved spending time with her daughter, Renee, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, who all meant the world to her. She enjoyed their time camping at Papoose Pond, their trip out west to the Wyoming and Montana area, always wishing to go back, and the many trips around their area spending quality family time, specifically Old Orchard Beach, where this became a yearly vacation spot with many friends and family. She sure did enjoy her Pier fries with vinegar. She was an avid Bingo player on weekends throughout most of her life with her Mom and friends. Couponing was a big hobby for Janis, nobody loved a bargain more than she did and she was great at savings and stockpiling for her family and anyone in need. Everybody shopped at Jan's house. Janis and her daughter Renee loved spending their time together scrapbooking and enjoying coffee. Her best season of the year was Christmas with her family - where a running countdown, on social media, began on December 26th for the next year. She shopped 12 months of the year for this one day and was usually more excited than her grandkids waiting for them to open their gifts.

She enjoyed watching the Boston sports teams and was a devoted fan, especially the Red Sox and the Patriots.

In addition to her daughter Renee, she is survived by her brother, Richard Matthews and his wife Diana of Dracut, Steven Matthews, and his wife Audrey, of Melrose. Her grandchildren (Kylie, Leigha, Erika, Domenic and Jayden) and great grandchildren (Mason, Juliana and her adopted love Aspen.) and was preceded in death by her brothers Danny Matthews and Terry Matthews.

Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

We'll let the pictures tell the story. Thanks for memories. Never forgotten. You're never really gone, if we keep talking about the adventures. The stories are forever, and so then are you.

Janis thank you for being a huge part of my childhood (and for putting up with our shenanigans). No matter what we got ourselves into you were always there, no judgement (maybe a little yelling) but you always had our backs. I am so lucky to have known you and hopefully I will see you again someday. Love you.

Nan, where to even begin. My first memory of you (I can remember) was trying so hard to punch in your number on the house phone to invite you over. Calling, calling, and calling, but come to find out I got the number wrong, and I spent an hour calling strangers. I also remember Dad going to work, and I would beg you to watch me for the day. Our day consisted of watching SVU, reruns of Full House we've both seen a million times, playing Go Fish for hours, learning to shuffle, me raiding your pantry for the best snacks, and demolishing all the good ice cream. Dad would come to pick me up hours later, and I would hug you goodbye. Then the first thing the next morning, your phone would ring until you answered. The day repeats. Somewhere along the way, I grew up and it was my turn to take care of you. I found your favorite ice cream, knew your Dunkin order by heart, heated your coffee 5x in an hour for you to ask for a freshly made one, and stayed up countless school nights watching SVU until you fell asleep. I took you to your chemo appointments on the days mom couldn't, I skipped school to make sure you got your meds, bought us candy bars on my way home from school so you could have a snack with me, and went on little walks until it became too much for you. It's funny how crazy life can be. At the end of the day, even if we were fighting, I know you love me to the moon and back. And I know you know I love you tremendously, even if I didn't say it. I will always play Harry Styles for you, Nan. Forever xo.
