Janko Misic Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 10 to Sep. 12, 2010.
MISIC, Janko September 21, 1937 - September 7, 2010 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janko Misic, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Left to mourn his passing is his wife and best friend of 41 years, Milica; his two daughters, Diana (Robert) and Tamara (Shaun); his brother, Vojislav and sister, Ruza. He will be especially missed by his five grandchildren, Maxim, Andreas, Eva, Stefan and Nikolai; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Janko was predeceased by his parents, Drago and Spasa Misic; his brother, Andelko and his beloved sister, Borka. Janko was born in Skugric, Bosnia, Yugoslavia on September 21, 1937. He received a B.Sc. degree from the University of Zagreb in 1968, graduated from the University of Alberta in 1970 with a M.Sc. degree, and received a doctorate degree from the University of Alberta in 1974. After gaining experience in the consulting engineering industry, he formed his own consulting company, Techna-West Engineering in 1979. Under his leadership, over the next 25 years, the company grew from a two-man operation to an internationally recognized company of over 70 staff. During that time, Techna-West was nominated for multiple awards and received a Design Excellence Award in 1989. In 2006, Techna-West's success attracted the interest of and was sold to Jacobs Engineering, one of the largest consulting engineering companies in North America. Even though Janko officially "retired" in 2007, he never really stopped doing what he loved. Janko continued to provide invaluable guidance and lend his expertise to his professional colleagues. Although Dad worked so hard for all his achievements, he enjoyed the fruits of his labour his whole life. He built his dream home in 1999, owned multiple vacation properties in BC, Arizona, Mexico and Yugoslavia, and he shared his passion for travelling with his wife, daughters, and their families. Dad will be most remembered for his endless generosity. He was responsible for helping many of his immediate and extended family members immigrate to Canada. Dad had such a special presence and was so much to so many. His philosophy in life was an inspiration to all of those who were fortunate enough to have met or known him. A Memorial Service Celebrating His Life will be held on Monday, September 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 - 111 Avenue, followed by a private family service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the National Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation, 2446 Bank Street, Suite 656, Ottawa, ON K1V 1A8. Hi Tammy,

I would like to pass along the Djogovic family's sincere condolences and wishes for strength and love during this time for you and your family. We were not able to attend the services for your dad, but I wanted to let you know that we all felt your dad was a strong, caring and kind man. I always held your dad in the highest esteem, and have great respect for all he achieved and the kind of family that he helped to create. He will be missed by many.

I hope that you can pass along our thoughts and prayers to your sister and mom, and we know that your family will rely on each others love and compassion during this most challenging of times

Primite nase saucesce. Janko ce uvek biti u nasim najdrazim mislima.

Every now and then you cross paths with someone who has a positive effect on your life. This happened to me and I am sure to many others when we met and were befreinded by Janko. His kindness was boundless as was his generosity. In the years that I knew and worked with Janko I never heard him raise his voice in anger. I heard only a voice of reason infused with wit and charm. Is it any wonder he was so respected and liked by all.It is a terrible loss to his freinds but moreso his family and my best wishes go to them here. I am sure Janko has already hit his first tee shot at the big golf club up there, probably into the fairway. I hope that at sometime in the future I and others get the chance to join him for a glass of wine at the nineteenth hole. God bless Janko

We will always remember Ujko Janko for his wisdom and guidance, generous and giving spirit, and genuine concern for all his loved ones.
Ujko to me you will always be the epitome of grace, intelligence, generosity, love and care, someone who always seemed to know what needed to be done and made things happen.
I loved listening to stories of your journey from childhood to the successes you created and enjoyed through hard work and ambition, as told to me by my grandmother and other family members. It was obvious you were a distinguished child, and then a distinguished gentleman.
We will miss you immensely, but will always remember your warm smile, your gentle jokes, your giving spirit, and your infinite wisdom.
Ujko may you rest in peace. You will be in our hearts and memories always.

Our condolences to our dear Ujna Milica, cousins Diana and Tamara and their families during this time of great loss.
Ujko continues to live through your spirits.

Dear Teta Milica, Tam, Shaun, Diana, Rob and families.

Please accept our condolences on the passing of Janko; husband, father, grandfather and much more to many more.

There are no words to take away the sorrow, nor should there be, as it is a representation of the love you shared with such a remarkable man.

I hope you all find some comfort in this poem, as I thought it a great representation of love.

They are not dead,
Who leave us this great heritage of remembering joy.

They still live in our hearts,
In the happiness we knew, in the dreams we shared.

They still breathe,
In the lingering fragrance, windblown, from their favourite flowers.

They still smile in the moonlight’s silver,
And laugh in the sunlight’s sparking gold.

They still speak in the echoes of the words we’ve heard them say again and again.

They still move,
In the rhythm of waving grasses, in the dance of the tossing branches.

They are not dead;
Their memory is warm in our hearts, comfort in our sorrow.

They are not apart from us, but part of us,

For love is eternal,
And those we love shall be with us throughout all eternity.

All our love, thoughts and prayers.

Sue, Marc and Nate.

It is with great sadness that we bid a final farewell to Janko, our dear friend of more than four decades. Our two families grew and shared many precious moments together from humble beginning as students in Edmonton and newcomers to Canada, through developing our families and careers, the joys of watching our daughters becoming adults and starting their own lives and families, to enjoying wonderful moments together in our retirement. Janko, with his great love of life and family, tender care for his friends, determination, persistence, wisdom and clear vision of life, was an inspiration and an example to follow. He was a lion and a gentle giant who guided and fought for many, and cared for, supported and helped even more. This cruel illness has taken him from us unexpectedly and quickly. He was indeed an exceptional man and a great human being that will be sorely missed by all.

Neka mu je laka zemlja I vjecnaja pamjat.

And to you Milica, Diana, Tamara, and the rest of your families, we stand grieving with you, and will always be there to share, to try to ease your pain, and to keep Janko’s memory alive.

It seems like yesterday we were all newly arrived graduate students from former Yugoslavia, struggling to keep up with our studies and survive in the new country. We remember Janko from that time, how hard he worked at the U of A, and how happy he was to bring Milica. He was joking saying that now that she already got a wedding dress, he has no choice but to marry her... What a loving marriage that was and how many times we were in each other places. I remember their first apartment, purchase of their first sofa that did not work out so Janko then replaced it. And buying their first house and worrying, like all of us at that time, if we can keep up with payments. And then kids arrived and the rest of a complete, successful and fulfilled life.
Then life separated us and after many decades we renewed our friendship last year in Mexico, and were looking forward to spending together many more winters there with other friends form our Edmonton youth.
We are stunned by the quick and sudden chain of events. We are more than saddened by the loss of such wonderful and special person. And we remember with tenderness this great husband, great father, successful professional, pillar of Serbian community, and a great guy. Milice you and the children are in our thoughts and hearts and we mourn with you.

Dear Mrs. Misic, Diana, Rob, Tammy, Shaun,

My heart aches for you all and for Janko's grandchildren. I know this must be a terribly sad sad time for you.

I will always remember how kind and generous Janko was to us girls in high school when we'd take over the Misic residence. He seemed happy to have us around, always asked us how school was going and how our parents were doing. He wanted us to be comfortable in his home and he always made us feel more than welcome. This was also true when we were invited to spend time with your family in Yugoslavia, the summer of 1990.

Janko's legacy is his beautiful family. I feel privileged to have known him and I know his spirit will fill your hearts with memories to cherish.

All my love to you,
Claire
