Jean Rossbacher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 29, 2017.
Jean Mary Dearing Rossbacher passed away at Hughes Homes in Fredericksburg on November 26, 2017, one day before her 93rd birthday.

Born November 27, 1924, to James Roscoe and Clara (Patterson) Dearing, she was raised in Corry, Pa., and graduated from Allegheny College as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. At the close of WW II she married Richard Irwin Rossbacher and lived in New Haven, Connecticut, while he pursued a graduate degree at Yale. They then moved to the naval base at Dahlgren, Virginia, where she taught art appreciation classes, served as a Girl Scout troop leader, and played a key role in the base's newsletter, The Lab Log. They moved to Argyle Heights in Stafford in 1967, and aside from a five-year stint in Boston when her husband was associated with Boston University in the 1970s, she was a resident of the Fredericksburg area for the rest of her life.

She served on the board of the Frank C. Pratt Chapter of the Mental Health Association and was active with the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board. An energetic volunteer with the Rappahannock Regional Library and a member of numerous book clubs, she was rarely found without a book in her hand---and sometimes one in each hand.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard and six brothers: James Roscoe, Jr., Bruce, Burton, Tracy, Richard, and Malcolm Dearing.

She is survived by three daughters: Dr. Lisa Ann Rossbacher and husband Dr. Dallas D. Rhodes of McKinleyville, Cal.; Amy Rossbacher and husband Steven Bailey of Independence, Mo.; and Nancy Dearing Rossbacher and husband Stephen Sylvia of Orange. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Christopher Shawn Kimmitz and wife Kimaree of Stafford and their children Madison and Jessica; Alison Jeannine Kimmitz and husband Thomas Carter of Ashland; Rebecca Patterson Kimmitz and husband Andres Leguizamon of Bradenton, Fla., and their children Natalia, Nico, Santiago, Emilio, and Alejandro; and Caitlin Elizabeth Kimmitz of New York City. She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home, 1621 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Fredericksburg, at 11:00 on Thursday, December 30th, the Rev. Deacon Ed Jones officiating. Visitation one hour prior to services. Interment at Quantico National Cemetery at noon on Monday, December 4th.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 1001 Sam Perry Blvd., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401 or the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, www.theaftd.org, in memory of friend and neighbor Michael Hynden.

I am sorry to hear that Jean has died. I think I only met Jean one time but she made me feel so welcome. I sent her a Christmas card and letter after that, at Mom's (Dorothy Trail) urging. She didn't always return a Christmas card but when she did I knew she appreciated the humor and information. Mom let us all know about you guys: Lisa the college president, Nancy with the restaurant reviews and Amy with all the grandchildren. Our parents' friendship was built on their young marriages and children. I know you must feel as blessed as I am to have been raised with parents like that. My prayers are with you.

I am sorry to hear of Jean's passing. I have fond memories of being neighbors in Dahlgren, VA when we were young. I was tickled when my son Pepper was born on the same day as Lisa, just a year later. Jean and I shared stories as you two grew up, checking out Dr. Spock's advice and visiting the Blantons. We walked our kids down to the post office in strollers many times. I seem to remember that your folks liked to eat food one at a time; meat, vegetables, then starch. I certainly miss having her as a neighbor and friend.

Sympathy & love on the loss of your Mom & grandmother. Such a gift to all & she shared her knowledge & thoughts so well. Always great exchanges with she & your Dad. I remember visiting in their lovely home in Argyle Hgts & hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains a number of times. Treasured memories.

Jean Rossbacher was just a wonderful woman. So intelligent, well read, and genuinely kind, and a great conversationalist. When I was leading the youth group at St. George's, we were doing an outdoor picnic/fall leaf gathering, and I asked her if she'd like to come. She said yes, and sat with us and talked with the young people. That kind of spontaneity and openness characterized her, in my mind. A wonderful lady, a life well lived. My best to you all.

So sorry for your loss.
We didn't know Jean well, and not for very long, but we enjoyed our time with her.
She was funny and kind. Thank you for sharing her with us.

Jean will be missed by her friends at St. George's Episcopal Church where she worshiped for decades. I should know as Jean and I had the privilege of teaching an adult Sunday School class together. One comment that always sticks in my mind was her thoughts on education (both secular and religious). Jean said, "God never told anyone to be stupid." READ and LEARN. She was never without one or two books - practicing what she preached. Rest, good and faithful servant. And those shortbread cookies!!

My sincerest sympathy to you all. Mrs. Rossbacher was an admirable mother on the base. I loved all that we did together as Girl Scouts and have such wonderful memories of going to school together. Peace to you Lisa, Amy, and Nancy.
