Jean Wistendahl Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 22 to Jul. 24, 2016.
ATHENS - Jean D. Wistendahl, 95, loving wife, mother, and grandmother died July 21, 2016, at The Lindley Inn.
Born Dec. 7, 1920, in Bernardsville, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late William and Ellen Douglass.
Jean was an avid gardener who was active with the Athens Garden Club serving in the past as president. Her favorite flowers were begonias. Jean graduated from the New Jersey College for Women. She received a Master's Degree in Botany at Ohio University and worked as curator of the Botany Department's Herbarium. Her generosity was exhibited when she would host a sumptuous roast beef dinner every fall for her husband's graduate students. She would also present to her husband's graduate students, upon their graduation, a beautiful hand-embroidered, framed picture that related to their field of research.
On Oct. 17, 2014, Jean and her late husband Warren were honored by having a native plant garden named after them. The Wistendahl Native Plant Garden is located at the Athens County Visitors Center on East State Street. She was an amazing cross stitch artist and was a long time member of Stitch and Chat. A passionate reader, she was also a member of the Mystery Book Club.
Besides her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her husband Warren in 2006.
She is survived by her loving family, a son, Douglass Wistendahl (Francesca) of Athens and their sons, Luca and Devin; a daughter, Jean (Robert) Hoitsma of Columbus and their sons, Eric and Eliot; and a son, Robert (Judi) Wistendahl of Indianapolis, Indiana and their sons, Jacob and Mitchell.
Friends may call Sunday from noon until 2 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens. A private family graveside service will be conducted by Rev. Robert Martin at West Union St. Cemetery, Athens.
In lieu of flowers contributions to Athens Garden Club, c/o the Athens County Visitors Center, 667 E. State St., Athens, OH 45701 is suggested. Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register book at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.

To Doug and family,

So sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. Jean and Warren were very welcoming when I first came to town as a graduate student back in 1982 in the Department of Botany. We were all NJ natives. I will remember them both fondly.

Dear Doug, Jean, Rob and family,

We feel so sad to hear of the passing of your mother. Our sincere condolences to all of you. When we came to Athens in 1966 your mom and dad welcomed us with open arms and made us content to have joined the Department of Botany at Ohio University. Your mother was a gracious host to everyone, including faculty, graduate students and friends. She had a wonderful personality and always seemed to be able to make you comfortable in her presence. We will miss her very much.
We want to express our sincere sympathy to you and your families.
Sincerely yours,
Irwin and Ana Ungar
