Jeff Goin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 15, 2005.
GOIN, Jeff Beloved husband, father, brother, son and friend Jeff Goin passed away August 13, 2005 at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. Born in Wetaskiwin on September 30, 1950, Jeff grew up in Thorsby and lived most of his life in Edmonton. He was the son of Thorsby veterinarian and Second World War veteran James Goin and his British-born war bride Jean Dale. After graduating from Lindsay Thurber Composite High School in Red Deer, Jeff attended the University of Calgary and then the University of Alberta, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, and he later earned a Masters degree in Education from San Diego State University. He became a teacher with Edmonton Public Schools, specializing in Language Arts, and taught at several schools over the course of his 27-year career. In the ten years leading up to his retirement in 2001, he taught at M.E. LaZerte High School. Beyond his calling as an educator, Jeff was a skilled carpenter and builder. His eclectic interests included literature, philosophy, art and music. A lifelong athlete, he was an avid hockey and rugby player and a skier. Predeceased by his father, mother and sister-in-law Missy Goin, Jeff will be lovingly remembered and acutely missed by his wife Sharon McMinn, sons Les and Josh Goin, Andrew, Ryan and Neil King-McMinn, his brother James Goin and sisters Jennifer Goin and Helene Popik, father and mother-in-law Bob and Nora McMinn, and first wife Nancy Goin. He also leaves behind grandsons Justin and Zachary Goin, nephews Jon and Tyler Goin, and nieces Karen Popik, Jackie Sturko and Amanda Popik. His extended families and enormous circle of friends and former students will cherish the memory of a man who was eternally honest and honourable, generous and warm-hearted, loyal and forgiving, and a great Albertan and Canadian. The world is poorer for his passing. The family wishes to acknowledge the competence and kindness of Dr. Tony Reiman and the staff on Unit 30-31 at the Cross Cancer Institute. Funeral Services will be held at St. Paul's United Church, 11526 - 76 Avenue, on Wednesday, August 17, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Cross Cancer Institute.

I just started treatments at Cross Cancer and happened by a beautiful picture that caught my eye and noticed the name it was donated in honour of so curiosity got me googling the name. Jeff Goin was my English teacher in high school and one of my favourite teachers throughout all my school years.
His passion in teaching and in life was admired by many of his students. I have to mention all the different colours of dc martins he wore because there were many.
I’m saddened to hear of his loss with cancer and wish to extend my condolences to his family and friends.
Thank you Mr Goin for being such an inspirational influence in my life. ❤

Please accept my sympathy for the loss of your beloved Jeff. We worked on ELAC together and it was wonderful to get to know him through our language arts community.

My memories of Jeff are of someone with his arms open wide and fingers extended, embracing and exploring and celebrating his life in this universe. He was a most rare individual, living life fully and interested in the lives of those around him. Always encouraging, Jeff talked me into contributing to an idea of his--"Cam's Corner," a section of the English Langauge Arts Council website. ELAC owes Jeff much, for he shephered a new direction for us--putting into cyberspace many of the ideas and visuals from our annual conferences to share with others. Jeff, ever the teacher, indelibly touched the lives of his many students and colleagues. Thank you, Jeff, for your warm friedship.

As our precious 6 year old son said to me after I told him that "Uncle Jeff" died... "Mummy, is Jeff in one place?" -- Well Will, that is a good question, and I am not really sure... --"Well, Mummy I actually know where he is"... where Will? "Jeff is with God, but his love is everywhere". How true and pure. Our love to Sharon and extended family and to all that have been touched by an extradinary man. Love Margie, Don and Will.

A simple reflection on what a truly authentic individual Jeff was. My personal interaction with Jeff was much smaller than most -- just 2 dads talking at a football game: sharing words, sharing thoughts and sharing pride in what our boys were doing. Nothing more than that ... and yet it felt like more than that.

We both miss and celebrate Jeff.

Jeff's Family and I truly appreciate the many kind comments and thoughts from all of you. I am Jeff's wife and wanted to share a piece of writing that I discovered today. It is a 90 second Bio of himself that he was formulating for future job possibilities. It truly is a treasure to me that I would like to share with all of you. Thank you all again for your love & support through our difficult time.

Jeff's 90 second Bio

I am honest, open, appropriate and direct; an individual who feels very lucky and optimistic. I feel lucky for many reasons: I have a wonderful partner who is supportive in my endeavours of self-examination and self-renewal. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to guide 5 young men as sons and step sons; as a teacher for 26 years had many more opportunities to interact with young people and contribute to my community in a ways that I feel are vital. I am healthy and rather then feeling over the hill, I feel I have a view from the top with the prospect to actually look. I feel confident being part of a whole generation of people who are transforming our opinions about the boundaries of age. I am skilful in my mind and body: having been able to complete a MA, build a house or play a decent game of hockey. It is wonderful to be mature and develop the hard won confidence to listen and not shout to wait rather then run after. I am open, confident and flexible - a consciousness that I know will serve me well in this new millennia.

I was saddened to learn of his passing. I was lucky to have Mr. Goin for a teacher, while attending M.E.LaZerte. While I never knew the private man, I remember the kindess, happiness and respect he had for each and everyone of us. He was exhuberant; I have a fond memory of Mr. Goin draped in a flag, dressed as Captain Canada. I am honoured to have had the chance to have him in my life, albeit briefly back in 1992. My condolences.....

I was so saddened to learn today of Jeff's passing. We taught together at W.P.Wagner and M.E. LaZerte. I have a CD that Jeff prepared for me when he left LaZerte. We had many good times together which leaves me with many memories and many photos that I took over the years. My deepfelt sympathies to all the family.

Mr. Goin was my favorite teacher at Kenilworth Junior High School. He put my mind at ease the very first day of Grade 7. He made coming to class the best experience. I learned alot from Him and I will truly miss him.I pray that his family have peace and Remember all the good times that they spent together.
