SHERBURN:    A Private Family Graveside Service for Jeffrey P. Ross , 68,  of Sherburn, Minnesota, will be held Friday, May 1, 2020 at the Sherburn Cemetery in Sherburn, Minnesota with Pastor Steven D. Wilson  officiating.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later time and will be announced.

Jeff was called to his eternal rest the evening of Sunday, April 26, 2020, at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. after 74 days of hospitalization, Jeff was “Done” fighting the many medical issues that his body had thrown at him.   The staff at Kramer Family Funeral Home extends their appreciation to the Ross Family for their trust.   Please share a memory of Jeff with her family by signing his online guestbook or watch Jeff’s Video Tribute on his obituary page at www.kramerfuneralhome.com

Jeff was born on September 7, 1951, to Myron and Joyce (Harmes) Ross in Litchfield, MN. He graduated from Burnsville High School in 1969 and then attended Augsburg College on a football scholarship until his injury transferred him to Winona State College on a baseball scholarship. After getting his teaching and coaching license, his first job took him to Minnesota Lake. This is where he met Darla, whom he made his wife on August 3, 1979. They moved to Sherburn in 1980 where Jeff taught and coached for the next 29 plus years. In 2009, after 34 years, Jeff retired from teaching but continued to coach golf for a few more years. In 2014, Jeff was inducted into the Minnesota State Golf Coaches Hall of Fame.

Growing up, Jeff’s family made many moves: from Kansas to Georgia, Connecticut, New Jersey, with many stories of his time in Long Island, New York, eventually coming back to Minnesota. Through all the moves, Jeff got involved with his new community through sports, which became a very important part of his life and how he lived. He was not a one sport person, playing baseball, football, basketball, etc. and golf as he got older. Jeff had many great experiences and memories with sports, from pee wee to high school to college to mature-hood.  In high school and college, he set many records that lasted for years and it included the opportunity to play in the college Baseball World Series in Arizona. During college, Jeff had the opportunity to be “run over” by Dave Winfield during a college scrimmage.  In coaching, Jeff’s Minnesota Lake Girls Basketball team went to state. Jeff had the opportunity to coach many young people on to the state golf tournament, including taking the girls’ golf team to state, and he had one young man earn first place in state. The boys’ golf team held the record for the most conference wins under Jeff’s coaching. What he enjoyed most about sports was being able to watch and coach his sons in football and golf. Jeff cannot claim a Hole-in-One on the golf course, but he did win the Men’s club tournament in 1991 and again in 1997. Watching sports of any kind was his favorite past-time. He loved going to the Gopher Men’s Basketball games where he had season tickets for many years.

Jeff never worked just one job, he usually had at least two or more things he was involved with. Any list would be incomplete, but it included cooking at A&W along with several other places, part-time cop, working at a grain elevator, a moving company, as a Schwann’s driver, working on a friend’s well drilling company, and the list goes on and on. In Sherburn he was involved with the Fire and Ambulance Department, proudly serving for 31 years. He managed the Fox Lake Golf Club for 29 years and was famous for his great breakfasts on Sunday mornings. He served on the Sherburn City Council and for the past 1 ½ years he was proud to serve as the Sherburn Mayor. While teaching, he was the head negotiator and served on many boards throughout the district.

Jeff will be greatly missed by many. His sense of fun was contagious and he could usually be found surrounded by people listening to one of his many stories, most often relating to something he had experienced. He was a compassionate, consoling man, who brought comfort to those he encountered as an EMT, as well as others who needed comfort as a friend. He was a problem solver, who always looked at the big picture to find the answer. He loved life. He loved fun. He loved his family. And he loved Dairy Queen – having a self-proclaimed ability of being able to sniff one out no matter where he was.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his wife, Darla, of Sherburn; sons Jaycob (Betsy) of Santa Fe, NM, and Ryan (Aj’a) of Sherburn. Jeff’s pride and joy, grand daughters, Rielle of Sherburn, and Adyson and Meredith of Santa Fe, NM; and grandson, Henrik, of Sherburn. Brother, Gerry, of Rosemont, and sister, Melissa Whitfield, of Castle Hayne, NC. Nieces; Elizabeth (Justen) Hopkins of Castle Hayne, NC;  Jaimi (Stella) Ross, of Lakeville; Sarah (Kinsey) Barlow, of Eden Prairie; and Cati (Matt) Moats of Savage. Jeff is survived by his 100 year old father-in-law, Ward Weyhrauch of Minnesota Lake; and numerous brother in-laws and sister in-laws; nieces and nephews who hold their Uncle Jeff close to their hearts.

Jeff is proceeded in death by his parents, Myron and Joyce Ross; brother, Michael Ross; mother-in-law, Norma Weyhrauch; brother-in-laws, David Whitfield and Ward Weyhrauch, Jr. and nephew-in-law, Chad Weyhrauch.

Jeff was a hoot and a natural born leader. The last time I saw him was at our high school reunion in 2009. We laughed and talked about him taking my QB spot while was injured. Of course, he led our team to victories and me “heal” a lot faster to reclaim my spot. RIP Jeff.

Darla and family,

I was saddened to hear about Jeff's passing. I always enjoyed being around Jeff when we were at WSU taking education classes. He always kept the class interesting! I would see him when he was at Mn. Lake and then later on at MCW and he always had a story or a warm greeting. He is going to be missed by a lot of people. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

My heart goes out to the Jeff Ross family as he was a very influential person in my life. I was lucky enough to be on the 1978 Minnesota Lake Girls Basketball Team that Jeff coached and lead to a state tournament for the first time ever for our town. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life because of him. Not only was Jeff a tough coach but a compassionate one. He was someone you always wanted to be around, as he had a unique gift that exuberated fun, hard work and belief in yourself. Im full of gratitude that I had the chance to know such an inspiring person. May your memories give you peace and may God be with you all.

It was a sad day when Steph and I heard of Jeffs passing. Jeff and I grew up together, played sports, Class of 69 at Burnsville High. It was Jeff who convinced me to come to school at Winona State College where we both graduated from. He was in our wedding. Jeff and his connections helped me get my first teaching job in Minnesota Lake. Jeff and Darla are very good friends to us, still, after all these years. What a great ride, with many stories, experiences, and much laughter to remember him by! Our hearts go out to Darla, Jaycob, Ryan and their families. Love ya, man.

My very first memory of Mr. Ross was in elementary school. I rolled my ankle on the playground or in gym class. I was crying and I didnt want anyone to touch it. My teacher took me down to Mr. Ross; he had a class in session but he took me aside and bandaged my ankle and doctored me up. I dont remember any pain, just that he had me laughing by the time I was done!!

Many years later I was lucky enough to get to know him again as my daughters grpa. When he first found out he was going to be a grandpa- he was so thrilled!! I had people stopping me all over town saying that Jeff had told them he was going to be a grandpa and how excited he was. And he was such a wonderful grandpa. He came to all of Rielles events. Dance recitals, t-ball, soccer, ice skating. Grpa was so proud of her and he was always there supporting her. He absolutely adored my little girl and everyone in town knew it. Those two shared a very special bond that was evident to anyone who came across them.

He used to pick her up from preschool and daycare and they would hang out and watch Gunsmoke (Rielle would usually nap on grpas lap! But she would come home and tell me that her and grpa watched gun smoke today with Matt Dillon as James Arness ). I always knew that if she couldnt be with me there was no safer place in the world for her than with grma and grpa because they absolutely adored her. Rielle and Jeff would tease one another so bad, sometimes they sounded like siblings!! But it was just because they loved each other so much. Oh - and they took lots of trips to Dairy Queen to go have lunch breaks with Daddy too! Rielle was always extra hyped up those days when she came home

Jeff loved being a grpa and we are both so lucky to have had him in our lives. We will never forget him and I promise that Rielle will always know how proud and thrilled Jeff was to be her grpa. We love you and you will be greatly missed. Until we meet again.

My sincere sympathy goes out to Jeff's family. I was on the 1978 Minnesota Lake Girls Basketball team which Jeff coached and lead to the first ever MN State High School GBB Tournament for the Minnesota Lake Lakers. He was a coach of extreme character AND vocal capabilities that could carry throughout the largest gymnasium. He was the 1st coach to introduce the 1-3-1 defense which ultimately lead to a time-out within the first few minutes of every game. We respected his demands of hard physical & mental work and dedication. He not only brought us girls together as a team, he brought the people of our small rural community together as well. We were all united and we were strong. Our family, friends, and community still share this life-time memory......thanks to Coach Jeff Ross. A man not to be forgotten. All our love.

I also remember being in lifeguard class and he was our victim one day so we could learn the proper techniques for rescues. Let me tell you he played the part well! He will always be one of the favorite teachers I ever had and one of my favorites overall!! Darla, Jaycob and Ryan....Know I am thinking of you during this difficult time.

I can hear that voice barking out at football practices and games. The 59 defense that he ran, I had never heard of before, but it has stuck in my mind. The golf cart on the practice field was a symbol that football practices were here. That laugh, and the smile, the picture on this page says it all. The garage after Friday night lights. When he would play buck, and if you didn't count tricks, the look he would give you, and maybe some choice words. He was a great negotiator for our school, and did a lot of great things that are still in place today. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Ross family, Jeff was very good to me.
