Jeffrey Lee Kao: A Life Well-Lived and Deeply Loved

Jeffrey Lee Kao, 63, passed away suddenly but peacefully in his own bed, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends.

Born to Joyce (Clausen) and Lindy Kao, Jeff was a man of many talents. He was a devoted father to Shannon (Jesse Evitts) and a proud grandfather to Kazia Goldberg Evitts (19), Redmond (6), and Ruby Kao Evitts (1), who loved his signature humor (or in Canadian, humour), and ability to challenge them to think differently. He is also survived by his sister Cynthia Falzer, nephew Jason Falzer (Jess), his ex-wife and lifelong 'thorn in his side' Jennifer Coffield, as well as dear friends who became family.

Jeff had many rich and varied careers. He proudly served in the Marine Corps. He was both lead trumpet player in the Marine Corps Band at Camp Lejeune and a skilled marksman. He had a passion for hospitality that led him to own and operate CJ Arthur's and The Old Ouilmette Depot in Wilmette bringing together people for good food and a welcoming atmosphere. Later, he ran a home inspection business before working for RTI in Lincolnwood (which became Elm, USA) where he rose to the role of President.

A gifted chef and barstool critic in the kitchen, a natural entertainer, and a loyal friend, Jeff had a way of making people feel at home. He was happiest surrounded by family, sharing many drinks and a great meal and especially making his grandchildren laugh. His absence leaves an unfillable space, but his love and generosity will live on in the many lives he touched.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Arthur Falzer, and his dear friend Mike Ruffalo.

Jeff's family and friends will forever cherish his kindness, his wit, his love of beef tallow, and the countless memories he created with them. He will be deeply missed.

I worked with Jeff from New Zealand for the past 20 years when he was with RTI and then ELM. His knowledge and wit were secound to none. He was generous with his time and was always patient with people...even when he didnt really want to be at times. He was always an inspiration to me to be better. I will miss him.
