Olmstead, Jessica Elizabeth
a most loving and giving young lady, passed away on Thursday, March 19th 2015. She was born in Prescott, Arizona on October 10, 1975 to Robert Dean Olmstead and Mary Elizabeth Motsinger Olmstead. Jessica always put the needs of others above herself and loved so much about life. The intensity of her friendship with everyone who was lucky enough to be a friend of hers was without doubt extreme. Jessica ('Shorts' - her nickname to us) is survived in life here on Earth by her mother Mary Elizabeth Motsinger Olmstead, her father Robert Dean Olmstead, her brother Jarod Robert (Erikah) Olmstead and their children together Sarah and Sage, as well as Hannah and Hayden Steinbrink. So many aunts, uncles and cousins that she grew up with and each had a special place in her heart: Aunt Maryn Boess, Aunt Joanna (Joey) Gregory, Aunt Suzanne Motsinger, Uncle Thomas Motsinger, Aunt Betsy Chance, Aunt Nanette Acosta, Aunt Karen Miller and Uncle Rodney Olmstead. Her cousin Emily Boess, by far, had a most special place in her heart as the two of them "got each other." And Emily's son, Noah was "mostest special" to Jessica, as well. All of her many nieces and nephews are going to miss their Aunt Jess, as she showed them so much love and fun whenever they were together. Her compassion for all animals flowed to her lucky pet family, both past and present. German Shepherds, particularly, held a special spot in her heart as she had two of them along with her kitties. Jessica was raised in Prescott, Arizona, attending grade school and high school there. She excelled on the high school volleyball team and played violin from grade school on to playing in the high school orchestra. Later, after attending and playing volleyball for Eastern Arizona College, she went on to attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott where she obtained her degree in Science and Technology of Globalization with an emphasis on Environmental Issues. She then used her dedication, knowledge and skills to help our earthly environment with her work at ADEQ and most recently with ITCA and their environmental compliance and education needs. She was always one to look out for the welfare of others. Jessica loved and sought out all things outdoors and music. That's how she was raised - exploring the backcountry, hiking, running, backpacking, canoeing and kayaking with her family on the Verde. And always music, music, music. She credits her Grandma M in nurturing her in education and music. Jess would love it if, instead of flowers and such, folks will contribute a little something of themselves, whether it be monetary or time, to someone in need, be it an organization or an individual, not just in her memory but also throughout their lives. "I see trees of green, red roses too see them bloom for me and you And I think to myself what a wonderful world. I see skies of blue and clouds of white The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night And I think to myself what a wonderful world. The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of people going by I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do They're really saying I love you. I hear babies crying, I watch them grow They'll learn much more than I'll never know And I think to myself what a wonderful world Yes, I think to myself what a wonderful world." G. D. W., G. D., B. T., L.A. A private family service will be held. Her many friends will celebrate her life she shared with them with a gathering as well. Funeral services were entrusted to Wakelin Family Funeral Homes. Please visit www.ruffnerwakelin.com to view and sign Jessica's guestbook.

Jess, I pray and think of you so often. I miss our runs, our deep conversations and salsa dancing in our living room. I no longer live in Phoenix and so miss our cozy living room where we shared such great moments. May you dance with the Angels and continue to shine bright. I miss you so very much. Always, your friend, Xavier.

I was very very close with Jessica some 15 years ago. We shared special times with one another hiking and camping. She loved the outdoors, 4x4ing along back road trails, she loved AZ. Jess was always an adventurous soul. I remember her love for music, especially live music. One of my favorite memories was listening to folk and bluegrass music with Jessica at The Edgefield, just outside of Portland, OR. Another time we took in some live tunes in Jerome, AZ which is a special memory as well. Every time I see a German Shepherd I think of her. She loved her Shepherds. Jessica just always had a special energy about her and she shared that with all the people she knew. Our lives eventually took separate paths, but a part of her soul will always have a lasting impact on my life.

I ran across this page, very unexpectedly. I am deeply saddened to learn of her passing. I think of her often and just hope, like the many wonderful memories posted on this page, that her beauty and soul live on through her friends and family. I just cannot help wonder what happened? So much to share with those she blessed in life.

Hi Jessica! I just read my comment in 2015 and had a nice laugh! I remember when I first met you at Ragnar Trail Zion with Mandy Cousins. We drank cold beer in the lodge and then played ping pong in the club house. What a fun time! Then we were on the same team at McDowell Mountain. Send me a little message in my dream when you get a chance. I'm sure I'll see you again at some point :) xoxoxoxo

I always think of you when I go out kayaking on the lake. I see your smile and feel your presence. So much love for you. I remember our bond over our love for German Shepherd and how long we could chat about it.
Sending you lots of love and to Brody. You are dearly missed.

I've had the hardest time writing anything in this guest book. My first thought every morning since you've passed is "thank god, it was just a bad dream" my second thought is that I've lost such a huge part of my life, my past and my future. Reading these entries and all the Facebook posts make me feel better because I can truly see that everyone saw what I always saw in you. I go to bed hoping to see you tonight and will hope this for the rest of my life. This isn't the end of Jess and Em. I just have to travel a bit farther north now. I love you Jessica, more than words can express.

Jessica- WOW I can not even fathom that you are gone..I remember the classes we had in High school like it way yesterday- So young you are to go see God.
You always had a 4x4 truck and a puppy. Even though we spoke very little after school I still though a lot of you. May you rest in peace my friend and may you family find peace in the amazing person you were.

I will forever remember those long walks on the most beautiful of Rocky Point beaches in front of your uncle's house. The instant change from carefree, frolicking, beach goer, into compassionate, nurturing, care giver when one of those beautiful german shepards accidentally got whacked in the head.

Rest in paradise beautiful.

Heaven just got a little brighter.

I thought of you the orher day and I laughed so hard about our trips especially your beef jersey and energy drinks. You are amazing at all that you do. I will not talk of you in past tense as I will keep you alive and free in the present. The anger and hurt will settle of the loss of your physical state in time but I will never let you go. I will hold you near. To your family I have no words of comfort but that I am sorry. God bless you all. Stay strong and stay together.

Jessica, you are the only person I have ever seen clip their toenails inside a tent!! I teased you about it and we had a nice laugh together, one of many that weekend (Ragnar Trail Relay McDowell Mountain 2014 with Jessica Lay and Shaina Twain). I still have our text conversations and they still make me smile :)

Jess you are a very special woman to me and everyone around you. We bonded over our love for German Shepherds. My Bella loved your Brody and I adored him. We shared our love for the outdoors from hiking to kayaking, camping, and trail running. But I was never as crazy to do the Ragnar Relays. I always followed your updated any time you were out at one. I will miss you!
I took my kayak out on the lake yesterday in honor of your memory and could feel your spirit with me and hear your infectious laughter echoing between the canyons. I pray you find love, warmth and peace. I pray for comfort for your family, friends and Brody for their great loss. You will forever live on in my heart!
