Age 72, of South Fayette Twp., on Wed. Sept. 4, 2002; beloved husband of Florence Joy Hayes; loving father of Jeffrey Hayes and his wife Marylee of Bethel Park, Jay Hayes and his wife Suzanne of Eden Prairie, MN and Jonathan Hayes and his wife Kristi of Norman, OK; brother of Margaret Walker, Marjorie Crimm and Mary Williams, all of Indianapolis, IN, Virginia Cox, Dolores Pryor, Novella Kay Bryant and Phyllis White, all of Muncie, IN; grandfather of Whitney, Taylor, Jordan, Spencer, Jesse, Jazmin, Miles, Jaxson and Jillian Hayes. Mr. Hayes was a graduate of Virginia Union University and a Veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army, a retired Supervisor for the PA State Parole Board and served as the Chairman of South Fayette Parks and Recreation, a past President of the South Fayette Kiwanis Club and South Fayette High School Quarterback Club. Also, a past member of South Fayette Municipal School Authority and past Commissioner of South Fayette Boy Scouts. He worked closely with St. Vincent DePaul Society and the House of Hospitality Organizations. He served in many capacities at the First Baptist Church, McDonald. A 1997 recipient of the Allegheny Co. African American Pioneer Award, Mr. Hayes legend will live on. A local deli has named a sandwich in his name "The Jewett". Friends received 7-9 pm Sat. & 2-4, 7-9 pm Sun. in the BOGAN-WOLF FUNERAL HOME, 430 Washington Ave., Bridgeville. Services will be held Mon. 11 am in the First Baptist Church, McDonald. Family suggests memorials to South Fayette Twp. Library, 515 Millers Run Rd., Morgan, PA 15064 or the American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Dr., Pgh., PA 15205

Jon and family: We were so sorry to learn of your father's passing. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Our older daugher, Kate (now a senior at WVU), still fondly remembers him from her days at Portman's.
