Jim Hartung Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 16 to Jan. 17, 2026.
James Nicholas "Jim" Hartung, an American gymnastics luminary whose competitive excellence and coaching legacy spanned decades, died on Saturday, January 10, 2026, of a heart attack at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was 65 years old.

Born June 7, 1960, in Omaha, Nebraska, Hartung grew up immersed in the sport that would define his life. In addition to training at a gymnastics club, he practiced at home on equipment that his father built in the family back yard. He attended South High School in Omaha, where his early talent first coalesced with multiple state championships.

Hartung's collegiate dynasty began at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he competed with the Cornhuskers from 1979 to 1982. During that time, he earned 22 All-America honors and seven individual NCAA titles, including back-to-back NCAA all-around championships in 1981 and 1982. He also became Nebraska's first recipient of the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award in 1982 as the nation's top male collegiate gymnast.

His international career was equally distinguished. Hartung was named to the 1980 United States Olympic team but did not compete because of the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games. In 1984, he helped lead the U.S. men's gymnastics team to a historic Olympic team all-around gold medal at the Los Angeles Games. It was the first and only time American men have won that title.

After his competitive career, Hartung remained deeply connected to gymnastics. He served as a high-level judge internationally and, beginning in 2006, was an assistant coach for the University of Nebraska's men's gymnastics team for 19 seasons. His mentorship shaped generations of young athletes.

Nebraska's athletic department issued a statement reflecting the depth of his influence: "Jim is a true Husker legend and his impact on the sport of gymnastics will carry on for decades to come."

Colleagues and former athletes remembered Hartung for his passion for the sport and his dedication to building character as well as skill. Nebraska head coach Chuck Chmelka remembered Hartung's dedication: "In true Jim fashion, he was in the gym on Friday doing what he loved most, coaching, teaching, and spending time with the current generation of gymnasts."

Throughout his life Hartung received numerous honors. He is a member of the U.S.A. Gymnastics Hall of Fame, the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame, and the College Gymnastics Association Hall of Fame.

Hartung is survived by his four children, Jim, Nick, Jake, and Hannah.

Such a dedicated and determined gymnast and coach. His career as a gymnast earned him many well deserved awards and accolades. He continued and had a successful career as a coach as well. Many prayers for the Hartung family, May God be with you to help you through your time of loss.

I remember Jim from Norris Jr. High.
Every morning before school, he'd be in the gym on the rings. He was kind and very well liked. Sending prayers to his family.

Jim was also a member of American Sokol gymnastics. In 1985, he attended the American Sokol Slet in Chicago, participating in most of the social events, including the awards ceremony. It was only my 2nd Sokol Competition, but when I unexpectedly ended up a winner in Women's competition, the first thing I remember was "I need to get Jim's signature on my trophy!" He was gracious and kind that day. Something I will never forget. He's now with the other greats in heaven. My condolences to his family. SOKOLs fly!

Sending Jim's family are deepest sympathy on their loss. Our daughter so admired him while she competed as a youth with the Stafford Virginia Royals for many years. She and her team mates were able to watch him compete at George Washington University in Washington. DC in the 1980's. Christine so admired him for many years.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Jim´s family.
Jim was my kindergarten student at Jefferson School. I remember him as a very special and talented little guy even at such an early age. He would perform his gymnastics for our class much to our amazement and enjoyment! He will always have a special place in my heart!

I send my deepest condolences to Jim´s family, siblings, adult, children, and friends. Jim and I attended George W. Norris Junior High School together.
I have fond members of him.He always wore sweatsuits, carried his gym bag, and said, "Someday, I´m going to the Olympics" and that he did.
Rest in peace Jim.
