Jimmie Ford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 1, 2025.
Jimmie R. Ford, Sr., formerly of West Melbourne, Florida, passed away on August 21, 2025. Born in 1934 in Java, Virginia, and orphaned in 1941, he was raised by his paternal grandfather, George Ford, with the help of his grandmother's cousin, Dolly Terry. Despite suffering from partial paralysis, he worked on his grandfather's farm until his high school graduation. A tall, pretty, young female basketball player caught his eye and, after a brief courtship, he and Doris Hughes married in 1952.

Jimmie's first job was at Dan River Mills. Determined to put himself through college as he and Doris raised a family, he worked and went to night school to become an electrical engineer. They moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and he worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the Electronuclear Division from 1955-1958. After a move to Florida, he went on to work at RCA Communications Satellite Division (1959), Harris International (now known as L3 Harris, 1960's-1970), working on the space program, printer technology, and defense projects. He spent many years doing consulting work related to computer technology development, the Concorde supersonic jet, nuclear power systems and the P8A Poseidon military reconnaissance aircraft.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Doris, his son Jimmie (Stephanie), daughters Cynthia, Karen (Dwain) and Teresa (Greg), multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren and special family friends and great neighbors, Tim and Janelle Bowes. He was preceded in death by his brother Bobby Lee Ford and his wife Judith. Most recently, Jimmie lived in Bogart, Georgia.

Jimmie's hobbies included woodturning and any project he could use SuperGlue, a hot glue gun or electrical tape on. He loved all creatures great and small. Contributions honoring his life may be made to the Brevard Humane Society, 2600 Otter Creek Lane, Melbourne, FL 32940

My dearest Teresa. So so sorry!! How I wish I could be there to console you and give you so many hugs and kisses. You could cry on my shoulder as long as you wanted. We could even sit together with your mom if you wanted and look out the window all together. I know how hard this all has been on you. Now he´s resting in peace with no more pain. Love you so very much, Becky
