Joakim "Joe" Courteau Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2025.
Joakim "Joe" Courteau, 54, of Derry, New Hampshire, was lost at sea on August 23, 2025, in a tragic boating accident off the Salisbury coast. His passing leaves a grief beyond words for his family, friends, and community.

Born in Oceanside, California, Joe was the son of the late Joseph Courteau and of Rita (Jaglowski) and her husband, Thomas Jaglowski. He is survived by his sisters Corinna Courteau, Summer Nesbitt, Sarah Fleming, and Bethany Husson. He was predeceased by his brother, Micah Courteau, whose memory he always held close to his heart.

Joe spent his childhood in San Diego and Vista, California, where he played in creeks catching crawdads and fished at Kings Lake with his siblings. He also lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, before returning to California and later settling in Derry, New Hampshire, where he spent more than 20 years.

Joe's lifelong fascination with nature-especially creatures of the water-was more than a passion; it was a calling. He worked for many years in pet stores, where his encyclopedic knowledge of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and aquatic plants made him beloved by customers and coworkers alike. He created beautiful aquariums, ponds, and habitats, and his artistry extended to taxidermy, where his skill and imagination shone. Quirky and inventive, Joe was known for his unforgettable stories-like the caiman that once lived in a backyard pool with his dear friend Joyce-and for his ever-changing menagerie of unusual pets, even a skunk. Beneath every tale was Joe's noble character, generous spirit, and deep reverence for the creatures he loved.

A devoted uncle, Joe had a special place in his heart for children. He is lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Micah Courteau, Ryan Zebowski, Roman Sinigiani, Timothy Fleming, Ella Fleming, and Audrey Husson. He also doted on his best friend's granddaughters, Aryanna and Kiyah, even saving quarters for their future college funds. To all the children in his life, Joe gave laughter, encouragement, and unconditional love. His generosity knew no bounds; he gave freely and without expectation.

Joe also found anchor in the love of his best friend of 15 years, David Benedict. Their friendship became a brotherhood-rooted in trust, laughter, and countless memories shared side by side. Joe often said their bond was one of the greatest blessings of his life.

In their grief, Joe's family holds fast to the promises of Scripture: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you" (Isaiah 43:2). Though Joe's earthly life ended on the ocean, he was never truly lost to the sea. The Lord's hand carried him safely home.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. Coast Guard Merrimack River, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, the Massachusetts State Police, the Salisbury Harbormaster Department, and the Newburyport Harbormaster Department for their tireless efforts and compassion.

A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at Salisbury Beach Reservation, where a cross will be installed in Joe's honor on the jetty. All are welcome to attend. A private celebration of life for close family and friends will follow on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Joe's memory will endure in the love he gave so freely, the friendships he built, the waters he cherished, and the vibrant, creative life he lived. He was a man of noble heart whose generous spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Joe was a truly unique man and one of the most giving people on this planet! He always told his family that he loved them and made everyone he came into contact with feel special. He leaves a big void and we will miss him!
