Joan Stewart

Joan Battel Stewart, age 92, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, in Kennesaw, Georgia. Born on September 30, 1932, in Buffalo, New York, Joan lived a long and dedicated life marked by her commitment to family and a distinguished career in the horse racing industry.

Joan's professional journey was one of passion and perseverance. She began her career at Jefferson Downs in 1958, where she worked until 1965. From there, she joined the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolence and Protection Association, serving from 1965 to 1975. Her dedication and leadership led her to a pivotal role as Director of VIP Relations at the New Orleans Fairgrounds, where she worked for three decades-from 1975 until her retirement in 2005. Her presence and professionalism left a lasting impression on colleagues and patrons alike.

Joan was a devoted wife to her late husband, James Oscar Stewart. Together they built a family rooted in love and resilience. She was preceded in death by her sons Jerry Stewart, Michael Stewart, and James Stewart. Despite these profound losses, Joan remained a steadfast source of strength for those around her.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters-in-law Reva Stewart and Sandra Stewart; grandchildren Joellyn Stewart Berry, Jeremy Stewart, Alex Stewart, Owen Stewart, and Lucy Stewart. Her legacy lives on through them and the many lives she touched throughout her years.

A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Joan will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who mourn her passing. A Funeral Mass will be held on September 13, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church 6425 W Metairie Ave. A Graveside Service will be held on September 13, 2025, from 12:30 PM to 01:00 PM at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery 13396 River Road
