Joan Van Tienen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2013.
Joan Kilgour Van Tienen, 71, beloved wife of Jeffrey Van Tienen, died on May 21 after a brief illness. She was born on June 15, 1941 in Newburgh, New York, daughter of the late Irv and Lola Kilgour. Joan graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and attended New Paltz State College. She was retired from the Guilford Library and had been a co-president of the Mystic Calligraphers Guild.
Joan was a member of the Clinton Historical Society. She enjoyed quilting, crafts, and gardening. She also enjoyed sailing, exploring the coastline, trips to Cape Cod with Jeff, and she was a great lover of antiques.
Joan married Jeffery Van Tienen in 1978. She was a devoted wife and mother who cherished time spent with her family. Joan was a light-hearted woman with a loving, gentle nature and a great sense of humor.
Her family thanks the 7th Floor Hospice Unit and 4th Floor staff at Middlesex Hospital for their wonderful care.
Besides her husband, Joan is survived (and will be dearly missed) by her son David Kilgour Goodrich and his wife Bonnie of Highland, New York; her daughter Joy Goodrich Walker and her fiancé Kevin O'Brien of Walden, New York; her brother William Kilgour of Concord, Vermont; and her sister Robin Kilgour of Gainesville, Florida. She is also survived by her grandson Daniel John Walker; her mother-in-law Betty Van Tienen of Clinton; her niece and nephew, Melanie and Jason Kilgour; an adored aunt, Carmen Doody; her cousins, Jean Reed and Mary Monaco and their families; and several dearly loved friends.
Visiting hours will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, at the Swan Funeral Home in Clinton. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Clinton Historical Society Gardens.

Although we didn't see each other often enough over the years, I always loved and admired my cousin Joanie. She was a sweet and loving woman who left us much too soon.

I only knew Joan for a short time. She was so kind, sweet and very talented. I was so pleased to have sat next to her at the Calligraphers Christmas party. I will miss her very much. Marjorie Rekowski

~ Mom ~

Dear Mother, We Love you,
We miss you so much
Your love and your kindness
Your soft gentle touch

You were more than my Mother,
more like my best friend, a great listener too.
Oh how I will miss our special talks, watching movies,
laughing and crying with you.

You were my Angel here on earth
I learned so very much from you.
Always so gentle and so kind and your
heart would always get me through.

I can't ever say goodbye to you,
because I could never bear the pain.
Instead I'll say, "I love you Mom
until we meet again".

And my Love will continue
as each year passes by,
I will wait for my calling,
to once again, be at your side.

~ Loving Son.

I can see Joanie among her flowers and in her charming Garden House. Getting to link up with her again, through and with our mutual friend Vivian, was a special joy. She was Grace personified and will always be remembered with love.

Words are so inadequate to describe the hole in the hearts of Joanie's family and friends, at her passing. I only know that she was the cousin that held my hand as we grew up and remained my best friend forever. We shared so much in common, cried together and laughed together but I'll especially remember her as the person who told me there really wasn't a Santa Claus. I never stopped loving her, even after hearing that devastating bit of news and she later let me know that she did believe in the Easter Bunny.
