Joan Weisberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 24, 2024.
Joan Weisberg (née Levin), aged 89, passed away suddenly at home on September 6, 2024, in Fort Lee, NJ. Born on April 25, 1935, in The Bronx, NY, Joan was a vibrant soul who cherished jazz and theater. Her adventurous spirit led her to explore the world along with her beloved husband of 64 years, Bill. She loved to regale her family with stories about people they had met during their travels and kept in contact with for years.

Joan pursued her education with fervor, obtaining a BA from the University of Michigan in 1956, followed by a degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1977. She worked side by side with Bill until they shut their firm and retired in 2019.

In her work as an attorney, she was a tireless and empathetic advocate for women, shepherding women of diverse cultural backgrounds through difficult divorces. She was a former president of the Queens County Women's Bar Association. She did pro-bono work throughout her career, including for families of 9/11 victims, and was the coordinator of a Queens Women's Bar project to provide legal assistance to battered women.

Her passion for learning and advocacy for vulnerable women was matched by her love for hiking, which she enjoyed throughout most of her life. She was particularly fond of New Zealand, where she and Bill hiked the entire Milford Track in 1999, and the national parks of both the US and Canada.

Joan leaves behind her husband, Bill Weisberg, now of Yonkers, NY; son, Robert Weisberg and daughter-in-law Katie Gentile of Hoboken, NJ; son Michael Weisberg and daughter-in-law Kate Foster of Portland, OR; and granddaughters, Lucia and Hazel Weisberg.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward and Monroe Levin, and her parents, Benjamin and Dinah Levin.

Joan's legacy of love, adventure, and intellectual curiosity will live on through her family and all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring her memory with a donation to The Nature Conservancy or Planned Parenthood.
