Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 14 to Feb. 15, 2014.
YOUNG
JOAN MARIE (MISCOE)
Age 87, of Valencia, PA, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her beloved family, on February 12, 2014, at Passavant Hospital in McCandless Twp., Pittsburgh. She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 63 years, Thomas A. Young; her sister, Sylvia Michaels of Cresson; daughter, Laureen A.; and husband, James Cale of Valencia; son, Thomas E. and wife, Gina of Raleigh, NC; son, Randall M. and wife, Donna of Danbury, CT and son, Richard A. and wife, Kathleen of Tualatin, OR; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, located in Illinois, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. Joan Miscoe was born January 6, 1927, in Johnstown, the daughter of S. Edward and Helen (Vindisch) Miscoe. After surviving a lengthy childhood illness that affected her later in life, she was class vice-president and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1945. Joan worked at the Johnstown Tribune, where her father, Ed, was a typesetter and proofreader for decades. She greatly enjoyed her roles in advertising layout and as an executive assistant for several years. Joan and Tom Young were married September 9, 1950, in Johnstown. She was an excellent mother and homemaker, raising four children while relocating every few years from Monessen, PA to Lakewood and Rocky River, OH, to Allison Park, PA, Elyria, OH, and then back to Allison Park, and finally Valencia in 2007. She was an active member of St. Ursula Parish in Allison Park, and more recently at St. Richard Catholic Church in Gibsonia. Joan loved to compete and was active in multiple Bridge groups. She reveled in all types of word games, including Scrabble, Words with Friends and crossword puzzles. Earlier in life, Joan was a golfer, once winning the women's nine-hole championship at Wildwood Golf Club. She delighted in cooking, sewing, gardening, traveling to see family, cruises, wallpapering (thanks Mom), playing the piano, and making dried flower arrangements. She will also be fondly remembered for her charity work, including Meals-on- Wheels and the Christ Child Society. Joan was exceptionally upbeat, positive, and never had a bad word to say about anyone or in any situation. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Saint Richard, 3841 Dickey Rd., Gibsonia, PA, with a Funeral Mass following at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to the Christ Child Society of Pittsburgh, 204 37th St. #200, Pgh., PA 15201 or Essence of Love Animal Rescue, 429 Wimer Dr., Pgh., PA 15237, in Joan's memory. Arrangements by DEVLIN FUNERAL HOME OF CRANBERRY.

Tom, Bonnie and I send our sincere condolences to you and your family. We will never forget Joan or the good times the four of us shared over many years, including that wonderful Aegean Island cruise. Bonnie says she still remembers and appreciates Joan's help when Bonnie, a new golfer, joined the nine-hole group at Wildwood. "She (Joan) was so nice, putting up with me."

Tom, we are sorry to hear of Joan's passing. We completely missed the news or we would have been there. I always loved her pleasant face and she was nice to play golf with. I was in the 9 hole group with Joan, a brand new golfer, and she was nice to me. Believe me, it took patience to golf with me! Maureen and Marty NapolItano
