John Boyle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2013.
John Howard Boyle, age 87, Founding Director of The Lorene Replogle Counseling Center of Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago. Loving husband of Kathye Kerchner-Boyle, he is also survived by son John David Boyle and daughter Kathy Boyle-Gast (David) of Athens, GA, and granddaughter Hunter Gast (Nashville, TN). John was born in Jersey City, NJ and lived in Brooklyn during his childhood, excelling in his academics from an early age. Prior to assuming his position at Fourth, he was Director of Counseling and Clinical Pastoral Education at the Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas. Before that, John served on faculty at both the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (where he received his masters and doctorate in theology) and the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Temple University with an A.B. degree, and also holds a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, KS. John served in World War II as 1st Sergeant in the 42nd Rainbow Division of the U.S. Army in France and Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit was one of the first to liberate the Nazi Concentration Camp at Dachau, Germany, in April, 1945. Through such experiences, his prior decision to enter the ministry was affirmed with the conviction to counter the moral injustices he witnessed. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Michigan Avenue and Delaware. Contributions to honor John's memory may be made to the Lorene Replogle Counseling Center. Arrangements by LANE-MOYNIHAN DIRECTORS, CENTRAL CHAPEL, Downtown Chicago. Dr. Boyle was my counselor many years ago at the center. He was such a kind, wonderful man. Rest in peace!

Dear Aunty Kathye, my heart goes out to you at this time of losing this precious man by your side for so many years. Feel my hugs and comfort as you lay down at night. I shall never forget Uncle John's kindness and respect for my own precious man Russell, at our gatherings at your brother Bobby's. Uncle John would sit under that big oak tree and talk with my precious man showing love respect in sharing personal things together. My dear being Afro-American-cher-o-kee roots my charming partner, (who Passed on Jan.27, 2007 at 45) and this handsome Dr. John Boyle, my Uncle John talking and laughing with my dear man. I can still picture them together right now. Now they are all with those gone before us. Uncle John's eulogy for your mommy, my Gramma 'Kerchner' I shall never forget the words so eloquently written and shared with us that day. He comforted us with his words. So many wonderful memories Aunt Kathye. The Memorial Service was so beautiful. Your sister, Bettye, my mommy is doing well as she can. All you sisters hubby's going home. We are tried and tested to make us stronger. We hold each other up in PRAYER. When these times come, I always rely on the promise, that God will not give us more than we can bare. So hold this to your heart as you ask God for the comfort from his Loving Arms hold you as you heal from the deep pain right now. Love you sooo much, your Niece Nancy L. 'Roser' Bisset. Dr. Boyle was an extraordinary person who left a huge legacy. I had an opportunity to attend one of his seminars on "Forgiveness". His wise words changed my life. I am forever grateful. Anita Ilika

Although I did not know Reverend Boyle, I feel a connection. My father served in the 157th Artillery, "Red Poison", and he was also one of the first groups to liberate Dachua. He always told us "don't let anybody tell you this did'nt happen...it did". Please know my prayers are for Rev. Boyle and his family.
