John Carr Obituary

Published by Danbury News Times from Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, 2012.
Carr, John "Jack".
John Franklin Carr ("Jack"), 91, born December 27,1920, peacefully passed away on May 4, 2012 in Las Vegas, NV. He had been the owner of Macton Inc, located on the Danbury Airport until the late 1980's. Mr. Carr attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he met and married his wife, Helen Louise Ziegler, of Forest Hills, NY in 1937. They were married for 74 years. Mrs. Carr predeceased Mr. Carr on August 8, 2011. Mr. Carr started his career working for Bendix Corp in Ithaca, NY . He was a Merchant Marine Sergeant during WWII. He then became an award winning sales person for IBM and moved his family up and down the east coast with IBM until in 1954 when he took a job as general manager for Stromberg Time Corp. in Thomaston, Ct, which he held for over 10 years. During that time the family resided in Litchfield, CT. Mr. Carr then purchased Macton Inc., which made rotating restaurant and theater stage floors. He moved the company from Stamford, CT to Danbury. The new factory he built was an award winning design because it was a round building to house the giant turntables that were constructed within it. It was situated on the airport because Mr. Carr was an avid pilot and owned several planes which he flew himself. On a tough day at the office, Jack was known to pull back the curtains of his office window so that he could look out at his airplane sitting in its private taxi just beyond the glass and remember why he came to work that day. While Mr. Carr owned Macton, he won a Small Business Administration award for CT Businessman of the Year and was presented the award by President Gerald Ford in Washington, DC. After selling Macton, Jack spent his time raising Arabian horses on his ranch in Cotopaxi, CO, golfing in Mesquite, NV and boating off the coast of Washington State. Mr. Carr is descended from a long line of Carrs out of Chattanooga, TN. His ancestor, Gideon Carr of Virginia is a hero of the American Revolution. Gideon's Grandfather, Sir Thomas Carr arrived in Virginia from England in the late 1600's. Sir Thomas Carr is a direct descendant of the Carrs (Kerr) of Scotland who built and owned Ferniehirst Castle in 1470. Mr. Carr is survived by three daughters: Anne Elizabeth Carr-Allen of Henderson, NV, Judith Louise Carr of West Hartford, CT, Barbara Helen Carr Howell of Makaha, HI and one son, John F. Carr, Jr. of Bridgewater, CT. His son David William Carr predeceased him. He is survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One grandchild, James O'Reilly Jr., predeceased him. Jack has been buried in Evergreen Cemetery in West Haven, CT next to his beloved wife Helen in the Ziegler family plot.

I'm amazed at the life my father created for himself and us, his family. If there was ever an all-around Renaissance man Dad, it was him. I miss him and Mom very much, and can only imagine the fun they're having gallivanting around heaven. Rest in peace,Dad. You earned it.

I find myself saying all the time " well, Dad always said"...... You were my model for perseverance and excellence. Knowing you and mom were there if I ever needed anything was a huge comfort. It allowed me to live an adventurous life. Thank you Dad. I miss you.
