John CONWAY Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jun. 26, 2017.

CONWAY, John Seymour
December 31, 1929 – June 23, 2017
John died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Ann; loving father of David (Yolanda), Jane and Alison (Bryce); grandfather to Geoff, Sean Hannah and Matthew; brother of Martin (Ruth) and uncle to many nieces and nephews. John was born in London, England and attended Sedbergh School and St. John's College, Cambridge where he received his MA and PhD. In 1955 he came to Canada to teach at the University of Manitoba. In 1957 he married Ann; and then joined UBC's Department of History where he taught international studies and modern European history.
His research focused on the German churches under the Nazi government. His work resulted in his book The Nazi Persecution of the Churches 1933-1945, and numerous publications on church history, the Holocaust and the diplomacy of the Vatican.
John devoted much time to volunteer work including the Student Christian Movement, World University Services, and Canadian Institute of International Affairs. For ten years he was the director of the Tibetan Refugee Aid Society, often visiting Tibetan refugee communities in India. More recently, he served as chair of the Refugee Unit of the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster, arranging for the sponsorship of refugees. He will always be remembered for his generosity towards those less fortunate.
For many years, John played his cello in a chamber music group. He also loved cycling, cross country skiing, and hiking with Ann, especially in the South Tyrol.
Vespers for the departed will be held Tuesday June 27, at 7:00 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, 303 East Cordova (at Gore), Vancouver where a Requiem Mass for John will be held on Wednesday June 28, at 11:00 a.m.

My heartfelt condolences to the family and his UBC compatriots. Dr. Conway was my first undergrad contact with a begowned Cantabrigian. Overcoming the intimidation I felt (somewhat), I approached him in office hours about what reading I might do to improve my understanding of Modern European History. I dashed off to the bookstore, bought, read 'The Hedgehog And The Fox' and returned immediately to discuss my insights with Dr. Conway. (I believe my dispatch in complying with his suggestion perhaps startled him.) Noting his research interests, I now understand his queries about Confederate General and Episcopal Bishop Leonidas Polk during my oral 'defense' of my honours history paper. I would love to have been in contact; he's a treasured memory.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. John Conway. Dr. Conway was a man full of life and humanity. I will forever remember and treasure his kindness and inspiration he offered to us as WUSC students at UBC during our years of study (2002-2007). He was such a caring and inspiring personality. He will truly be missed by everyone but as the Bible tells us; God gives and God takes. I extend my sincere condolences to his immediate family and entire UBC community. May God Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace.

Deeply saddened by the news of John's passing. John gave to the world many folds than he took from it and that will be his legacy. He contributed to changing people's lives, me included, for the better. Please accept my condolences. John will never be forgotten.
