MOULTRIE — John Wendell Courtney, 79, of Moultrie, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at his residence.Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Pineview Baptist Church with the Rev. Lennon Howell officiating with the Rev. J.P. Norman assisting. Interment will follow at Pineview Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Brent Courtney, Justin Courtney, Chris Courtney, Eric Vasquez, Danny Mothershed and Donnie Mothershed.Born Oct. 8, 1928, in Colquitt County, he was the son of the late John Roderick Courtney and Urvie Flowers Courtney. He was an aircraft mechanic for St. Pete Clearwater Airport, a World War II Navy veteran, a member of the Moultrie Church of God, and attended Pineview Baptist Church.Survivors include his wife, Helen Tucker Courtney of Moultrie; five sons, John W. Courtney Jr., Ronnie Courtney, Stanley Courtney and wife Sandy, all of Tampa, Fla., Jerry Courtney and wife Nancy of Seffner, Fla., Terry Courtney and wife Penny of Auburn, Ala.; a daughter, Brenda Vasquez and husband Joe of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Paul Courtney and wife Peggy of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Edna West of Moultrie; and 11 grandchildren, Brent Courtney, Nicki Courtney, Justin Courtney, Chris Courtney, Kayla Courtney, Ricky Vasquez, Eric Vasquez, Sean McElhattan, Scotty McElhattan, Ashley McElhattan and Corey Straughn.The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Cobb Funeral Chapel.The family may be contacted at the family residence, 751 Bonnie Tuk Road.Memorials may be made to Colquitt Regional Hospice, PO Box 3548, Moultrie, Ga. 31776.Cobb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.Please sign the online guest book at www.moultrieobserver.com.
