John Dunwoody Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2024.
John Andrew Dunwoody, 75, of Grosse Pointe Park, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday August 23, 2024 following complications after a spinal surgery.

John was born on March 1, 1949, in Chicago, IL to Andrew and Virginia Dunwoody (both deceased). His family moved to Montrose, Michigan in 1954 where he led a happy and active childhood.

After graduating from Montrose High School in 1967, he attended Olivet College to play baseball. John transferred to University of Michigan-Flint, graduating in 1971, and Detroit College of Law in 1975. He practiced law as a pension attorney from 1974 until 1981 when he started his own firm, ACP Compensation Planning which he ran successfully for 43 years.

John met his beloved wife, Eva Carmona, and married in 1978. Throughout their 45 year marriage, John and Eva were warm and generous hosts to many joyous gatherings in their home. A renowned neighborhood mixologist, his chocolate martinis are legendary.

John was devoted to his family. He enjoyed family vacations to Mexico and especially their trips to Colorado where he taught his children and grandchildren to ski.

He was an avid athlete throughout his life. As a youth he played football, basketball and baseball and his love for sports and competing persisted throughout his adulthood. John played lawyer league softball, competitive squash, ran a Detroit Free Press Marathon, rode a motorcycle and took up sailing. Like their skiing adventures, his and grandkids benefited by participating with him in his exploits.

John was a member of Bayview Yacht Club and a longtime active member of the Detroit Athletic Club where he served on the Board and was a former Blackballer President.

John will be dearly missed by his wife, Eva Dunwoody Carmona, stepdaughter, Monica O'Brien, son Jon Dunwoody and grandchildren Cullen and Maggie O'Brien and Lincoln Dunwoody along with his siblings Barbie Burt Allet, Jeff Dunwoody (Tina), Bonnie Dunwoody (Linda) and his brother and sister in-laws and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on September 26th at 1 pm at the Tompkins Center at Windmill Pointe Park in Grosse Pointe Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation is made to a charity of your choice.

I'm so very sad to hear of John's passing. I've worked with John on the 401(k) segment of his business for nearly 15 years and he was an absolute joy to work with. John had a wonderful zest for life and it was clear how much he loved his family. I had the great pleasure of seeing Eva whenever we would meet at their beautiful home. My heart aches for Eva and his family as John will definitely leave a large void in their lives. God Bless you all, Laura Durkin

John has been my trusted Financial advisor for over 30 years. He truly cared about his clients and we´d often talk about things other than finances. I always looked forward to our phone calls, emails and face-to-face meetings. My heart goes out to his family, especially his lovely wife, Eva.

He was the MC at our squash doubles holiday party at the Cabbage Patch where he always made a point of remembering those who had passed away . He will be missed by anyone who was fortunate to have known him . Our deepest sympathy to Eva and family . We lost a good one .

My dear brother John you were loved and respected by family and friends. John being the big brother visited me in every state I resided just to make sure I was in a safe place. He was the rock of the family. He carried the quiet confidence in his soul. You will be forever missed by the family. Rest in peace my brother. Bonnie

My wife and I were so sad to hear of John's passing. John and I attended school and played sports together at Montrose. John was a groomsman for my wedding in 1972. We kept in touch periodically over the years. John and his family were an important part of my live growing up in Montrose. We send out sincere sympathy to his family and will keep them in our prayers.

It is with a heavy heart that we send our condolences to the Dunwoody Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this very difficult time.
John was such an incredible, kind, funny, and friendly person. He and Eva welcomed all into their home with open arms and a yummy chocolate martini.

Stu was a victim to John´s squash tournament strategy. As a gentleman, John made sure beverages (beers) were always provided for his competitors, and plenty of them. As Stu and his partner went on to lose the match, Pete Lyons and John had big smiles on their faces as the winners!!

May you all cherish the fond memories of him forever.

Like so many I met John @ the DAC. Over the years I grew to know him better through my learning of the wonderful game of squash. John was always smiling and ready to tease, making me feel a part of something I never thought would be part of my life. I will be forever grateful! I am very fortunate to have known this man John Dunwoody! Lord knows this world would be a much better place with more like him in it.
Rest easy John and know how much you are loved and missed. And much love to you Eva and family. xo

First years at the DAC traveling for squash league with John and the boys. Weekly questionable behavior! Memorable Toledo trips and air guitar on Grand Marais. Such a positive, kind soul. He´s already greatly missed

I first met John when he was dating my friend Eva 46 years ago, and subsequently I acted as witness to their marriage. John was warm, kind, and fun to spend time with. I rarely saw him sitting down; he was always working on some new project and his backyard and the fish pond he created were a highlight of the garden tour one year.
John pursued his passions with focus and intensity, and was a devoted, involved parent, a caring husband and loyal friend to so many. John Dunwoody was "one of the good guys" and will be greatly missed by those fortunate to have known him.

I´ve had the great pleasure of knowing John throughout my 40+ years at the DAC. From our league play, to tournaments we competed in, to our doubles league play, John was a joy to be around and a true competitor. He was a fine person, who I know will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Our deepest sympathy´s to Eva and her family.

I met John through playing squash at the DAC. His untimely passing has dealt a sad blow to the DAC squash community. Because he played at a higher standard than my own, I wasn't often on court with John but relished those rare opportunities I was able to play with him. More important than squash was John's ever-present smile and positive words which brought out the best in those around him. May the memories of John bring comfort and strength to his family and friends.

I have so many great memories of John. We played doubles squash together since the mid 1990's. John was always a great player and a fierce competitor. He was also a great guy who was an ambassador for the game of squash. Seeing John always put a smile on my face. I will miss John always. May John's memory be a blessing.

I had the opportunity to work closely with John on the DAC Board and got to know Eva well through attending many functions together. John was the consummate professional, but always kept matters positive and productive and with a frequent, tremendous great sense of humor. John's laughter and energy were infectious and always welcome. Many fond memories of John that we will share frequently among those at the DAC and elsewhere. John embodied and actively lived all of the best qualities you could hope for. God's blessings to Eva and John's family and friends.
