John Durham Obituary

Durham, John G., DDS passed away on August 20 at age 78 after a nine year struggle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Nancy, and three children: Dr. Dianne Durham of Kansas City, Kansas, Laura (Allan) Goodloe of St. Louis, David (Ann) Durham of Denver, Colorado; five grandchildren: Trip (Nit) Goodloe, Carrie (Kyle) Chapman, and Emily Goodloe of St. Louis, Katherine and John Durham of Denver; and three great grandchildren: Will, Hall and Katy Chapman of St. Louis. Also surviving is a brother G. Robert (Kathleen) Durham of St. Louis and cousins Emily (C.B.) Gebhard, Warren (Candy) Gladders, Thomas Gladders all of St. Louis, John W. (Carol) Gladders of Murphy, North Carolina, David (Bettye) Durham and Carolyn Roberts both of Collinsville, Illinois and many loving nieces and nephews. A brother Charles Durham preceded him in death. His wife Ann also survives. Dr. Durham was an alumnus of Purdue University and as a varsity football letterman was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor for Scholastic and Athletic Prowess at graduation ceremonies in 1952. He later served as a director of the Purdue Alumni Association and was a trustee of the Purdue Foundation. He was a graduate of the Washington University School of Dentistry in 1956 and after two years in the United States Army, returned to St. Louis to begin a private practice of general dentistry that he maintained for fifty years. Dr. Durham was Secretary of the Missouri Dental Board for eight years and was President of the Central Regional Dental Testing Service in 1980. He served as an assistant professor of clinical dentistry at Washington University and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of the School of Dentistry in 1982. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of Washington University at Founders Day in 1975. He was a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Services: Memorial service at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, 9450 Clayton Rd., Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Luke's Hospital (232 S. Woods Mill Road, Chesterfield, MO 63017); the Durham Brothers Scholarship Fund (John Purdue Club, 850 Beering Drive, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907); Washington University (Campus Box 1082, 7425 Forsyth Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63105); or the charity of one's choice are appreciated. Memorial visitation at the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway, Ballwin, Tuesday 4-7 p.m. Friends may sign the family's on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.

Mrs. Durham, Dianne, Laura and David, John's visit at Dad's funeral was testimony to the closeness our families developed during our years in Tealwood. We Shipleys will be forever grateful for such wonderful neighbors! Please accept our condolences for your loss but be comforted in the knowledge that our Good Lord certainly has a place for such a wonderful guy! Mike plans to represent us at the funeral. Much love!
