John Faria Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2013.
John G. Faria, Esq., age 67, of Westport, MA, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Swanson) Faria, to whom he had been married for 38 years, and father of Katherine Faria Reese and Lauren Faria.

Born in Fall River, MA, John was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Celestina (Baieta) Faria and brothers Charles and Joseph. He was a resident of Wellesley, MA, from 1975 until 2000, when he became a resident of Westport, MA.

A 1963 graduate of Somerset High School in Somerset, MA, John graduated magna cum laude with his BA from Brown University in 1967 and graduated cum laude with his JD from Harvard University in 1970.

After being admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1970, John started as an associate at the law firm of Palmer and Dodge in Boston. He became a partner in the Public Law department with a practice in public finance, serving as bond council for several municipalities from 1977 to his retirement in 1997.

John was always supportive of the communities where he lived and gave generously of his time as a volunteer. In Wellesley, he served on and was a past chairman of the Wellesley Advisory Committee and was also a member of various town study committees. He was a former board member of the Wellesley Community Center and a parent volunteer for several Town girls' athletic programs. In Westport, he served on the Central Village Improvement Committee, the Capital Budget Planning Committee, and the Westport Harbor Aqueduct Company board as Chairman. He was also a music lover and acted as treasurer for Concerts at the Point, a chamber music series, for several years.

John enjoyed the practice of law for 27 years, originally planning to pursue a second career in teaching after his retirement. His prostate cancer diagnosis coincided with his family's decision to move to Westport, and he opted to enjoy outdoor pursuits and time with his family rather than his anticipated second career. He was an avid tennis player and beginning golfer, and he also enjoyed kayaking, sailing, and swimming; walking the beaches and nature trails in Westport; gardening; and playing paddle tennis in the winter. A devoted father and grandfather, he was known as "Papa" to granddaughter Hannah, age four, and eagerly anticipated their weekly time together.

Surviving in addition to his wife Barbara; daughter Katherine Faria Reese, her husband Kevin, their daughter Hannah Louise, and their expected son John Walter of Natick, MA; and daughter Lauren Elizabeth Faria of Providence, RI; are brother George Faria and his wife Winifred of Somerset, MA; nephew Joseph Faria and his wife Linda, great-nephew Benjamin, and great-niece Lindsay of Fairfield, CT; niece Linda Faria Ogle and her husband John of King, NC; and nephew Jeffrey Faria, his wife Lisa, and great-nephews Jake and Luke of Somerset, MA.

A memorial service for John will be held Friday, March 15, 2013, at 11:00AM in Manning Chapel at Brown University (1-21 Prospect Street, Providence, RI 02912). Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private.

John's family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful team at Massachusetts General Hospital who cared for John and to support advances in prostate cancer research and care. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of John may be made to the MGH Cancer Center. Checks may be made out to Massachusetts General Hospital c/o Development Office, Attn: Lindsay Simpson, 165 Cambridge Street, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114. Note "in memory of John G. Faria" in the check memo line or in an accompanying note. Gifts may also be made online at www.massgeneral.org/give, where donors may designate the gift in memory of John in the "Tribute Information" section.

Learned of John's passing when we were away. So wish I could have been there for the service. John was one of the finest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing - brilliant, humble, honest and caring. My sincerest condolences. Jim Botelho

I just heard about John's passing this morning. How sad. I worked in the Public Law Department of Palmer & Dodge in the mid-80s and John was one of the reasons I look back on those years and smile. He was a kind and gentle man and touched many hearts. My condolences to his family.

A special person has been lost. John may have passed from this earth, but the memory of him will be forever in the saddened hearts and minds of those lives he touched. From second grade at South School in Somerset, and through Somerset High School, I was among the fortunate who had the privilege of calling him my friend, and seeing John's greatness evolve. He was the shining star in EVERY class and activity. He continuously raised the bar of excellence, and we all tried to emulate him. Of course, John graduated first in our class of 1963. As a class valedictorian, John's philosophical foresight and brilliance was evident even at the age of 17. In his graduation address he said, "We have the ability to create happiness, to enjoy family and friends and a close relationship with God. We can live happy lives; we can't control it's length, but we can control it's quality." John lived his words. My sincere condolences to John's family.

Dear Barbara,
How very sad to read this, and also so illuminating to learn more about your kind, generous, competent husband. My sympathy to you and your family as you mourn the loss of John. He loved being a grandfather and father...his family was always first.

He was also very giving of his time and municipal experience to Westport, especially as a member of the ill-fated Central Village Improvements Committee. Thank you for sharing him with us! We were so lucky to have him on our team. Deep breathes...
warmly, Elaine Ostroff

A shock to us both. Difficult to express our sense of loss of such a wonderful man. Tennis and Westport will never be the same without him.

Though we were law school classmates, I didn't know John until I arrived at Palmer & Dodge in 1972, after two years of government service. We became good friends and colleagues in the Public Law Department. John generously and patiently mentored me in municipal finance law. How had he learned so much in two years? Well, he was far smarter than I was; he was also a much better tennis player. Barbara and the girls have my deepest sympathy.

My sincere condolences to all of you. John and I were friends in his early years in Somerset and throughout high school. My mom and john's mom were friends and worked together for a number of years. Both women gave birth on the same day to sons who they named John. Last saw him twenty-five years ago. May he rest in peace. ---

My sincere condolences to his family. I was a classmate, friend, and fellow athlete during our years at Somerset High School. John was a sincere personable individual, who was a definite role model for all to follow. He treated everyone with respect and dignity. I am saddened by the news of his passing. He was taken away much too soon.

I was so sad to hear of John's passing. In my last conversation with John he did tell me, however, he had a wonderful life, great wife and daughters, family, work and recreation and fun. It makes me feel good he could express this. I have many fond memories of John in high school days at Somerset High School. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his family.

GOD has His ways of blessing us. John is with Him and we, someday, will too. Until then - God bless the years we spent together at SHS. Today is a celebration of Life. I know he had a good one and I also know the next one will much better. Amazing how 1963 seems only like yesterday. Knowing that there is a better tomorrow makes today an easier day to complete.

Please accept our Deepest Condolences in the passing of John.
He was taken way to early.
Sincerely,
