John Fulginiti Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2024.
Tucson, Arizona - John Vincent Fulginiti was born to Vincent and Shirley Fulginiti (nee Van Gorden) in Philadelphia, PA, on March 27, 1959, and passed away on May 16, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona. As the head of our family, John was larger than life. His persona, physical, and social presence were like no other. His superior gift giving skills will be remembered as fondly as his thunderous laughter. John was a devoted family man. He enjoyed soccer dad life and teaching his sons the skills they would need to navigate life. Always true to himself, every time he was asked as a young boy in Denver what he wanted to be when he grew up (firefighter, police officer, doctor, etc), his response was always "dad". The first born of his generation, John took his family responsibilities seriously. He helped raise his three younger siblings and assisted and advised his parents in old age. In his youth, John fished high lakes, skied diamond slopes, hiked the Rocky Mountains and hunted Arizona's forests. John was proud of the prize pin in his ankle from jumping off a pavilion at a summertime music festival in Aspen. As an outdoorsman in the Catalinas, Rincons, and points beyond, John's mapping skills and navigational expertise became legendary, more so his passion for photography. He spent time planning four-wheeling hunting and camping trips to photograph for later sharing with family and friends. While attending Tucson High School, John was on honor roll, played football, worked for the school newspaper, drove a Firebird, hiked Seven Falls, and journeyed to Nicaragua with Amigos de las Americas. At UCLA, John cared for those in need and worked as a police dispatcher, developing lifelong friendships. At home in Tucson, John earned his Ph.D. (Educational Psychology) at the University of Arizona where he met the love of his life, a fellow graduate student named Susan. John's career spanned the University of Arizona College of Medicine -Tucson, Pima Community College, Northcentral University, and United States University. He specialized as a psychometrician, serving multiple leadership roles in post-secondary education. A natural born educator, he could teach statistics to anyone. John is survived by wife Susan Ellis, sons Alexander and Lucas, mother Shirley, sister Laura (Dan Martin) and brother Paul (Lisa Fulginiti). He was predeceased by his father Vincent and brother Jeffrey. John will be missed by all who love him. Memorial donations can be made to charity in John's name.

Came across this belatedly. I remember hanging out at John's house back in the 70's. He had such a winning personality. There was a sense of entering into a safe space when visiting the Fulginiti's. Lovely family. I can still hear his laugh.

I just heard about John's passing. I grew up with the Fulginiti Family in Tucson; our neighbors; 4 kids in the Fulginiti family and 3 in mine. John's passing saddens me; I'm so sorry for your loss! John was always very very kind to me; pretty sure I had a crush on him when we were kids. My prayers to John's entire family, wife, sons, Shirley, Laura, and Paul. I know he will be missed. Even though we lost touch of each other over many years....even when we were way younger I knew he was one of the good ones. Lovingly....Mary Thierman

I first met John when he was a student in my PCC/AZ state required class for new faculty. I later hired John as a statistician and psychologist in PCC's office of research and planning. He was always a delight to work with. Helped many with their projects and dissertations. Through Rotary, I knew John's father, Dr. Vince. Vince was so proud of John's achivements.
To Susan and your sons, my condolences. He left us too soon.

John was my go-to expert for me when I was using statistics to present the progress students were making in the PCC West Campus Reading Dept. I thoroughly enjoyed my sessions with him as we went through the data because he was such a kind, cheerful, encouraging, insightful person--a joy to be in the presence of! His devotion to his family was evident in the decoration of his office. When Alexander was born, his door became a shine of photos to his new son. Lucas' and Susan's photos featured prominently too. I am so saddened by his death and wish he had had at least 20 more years to be a blessing to those who encountered him. My sincere condolences to his family.

I am so saddened to hear of John's death. As you say in the obituary, John could teach statistics to anyone. I was an English major and he helped me to break that science-humanities divide. I recall what a generous spirit John had, befriending and aiding (while encouraging independence) in others. His memory for me is one of the brightest points of light. May the light memories come to be ones that comfort all of you in John's family, esp. Susan.
