GAREAU, John Martin Forsyth
February 12, 1929 – Regina, SK
July 30, 2014 – Calgary, AB
John Gareau passed away suddenly at the age of 85 at the Rockyview General Hospital on the morning of July 30, 2014 with his loving wife Ethelene (nee McKinnon) at his side. John was born in Regina and spent his formative years there, learning of the importance of family and friends. After graduating from McGill University with a Bachelor of Science degree, he began a long and successful career as a landman and executive in the oil and gas industry, initially in Regina and then in Calgary, with a two-year period in Houston, Texas. John will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Ethelene, and his five children Paula (John) Galotta, Andrea (Stan) Boucher, Jonathan (Liz) Gareau, Timothy (Lisa) Gareau and Jennifer Gareau. He will also be fondly remembered by his nine grandchildren Carolyn, Kathryn, and Julia Galotta, Timothy and Holly Gareau, Carmen (Chris) Gordon, Andrea and Sean Gareau, and Nathan Gareau, and his three great-grandchildren Evie, Jared, and Alexis. John is also survived by his brother Dr. Paul Gareau and sisters Yvonne Rudichuk, Donelly Armitage and Jewell Wahlstrom, and was predeceased by his parents Dr. Urban and Irene Gareau and his brother Richard Gareau. John had a strong appreciation for fine art and classical music. He strongly believed in giving back to his community through many endeavours, including with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Andrew's United Church, the Oi Kwan Foundation, and McGill University. John loved the peace and tranquility of his family's retreats at Waskesiu Lake, Saskatchewan and at 'Toranglen' west of Millarville, Alberta. The family would like to extend their deepest thanks for the professional and compassionate care provided to John in his final days by Nurse Marcelle Morier and Dr. Nowell Fine at the South Health Campus – Calgary and Nurse Ken at the Rockyview General Hospital Emergency Ward. Funeral Services will be held at St. Matthew's United Church (2039 - 26A Street S.W.) on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. I for one was touched by the death of John Gareau.

I will never forget their visit to Vancouver Island and meal of fresh cod enjoyed together.

From the past, the announcement that Mom and Dad would be “out with the Steins and the Gareaus” is fixed in my memory, alongside other routines and music so fun to recall.

If these are the good ole days, they were too!

Best wishes to all the family,
from Jim Krause and the rest of the Krause Clan
