John GERMAIN Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Jun. 22 to Jun. 24, 2013.
GERMAIN, John Paul
October 8, 1919 - June 20, 2013
After a long life filled with many blessings, John Paul Germain of Sherwood Park, Alberta passed away peacefully on June 20, 2013.
He was born in Montreal, Quebec on October 8, 1919, the third child in a family of six to Désiré and Marie Louise Germain. The family moved in 1929 to a farm in the St. Paul area of Alberta. During World War II, he served in the Canadian Army as a Sergeant in the 8th R.E.C.C.E. Regiment throughout Europe, including the liberation of Holland. While on leave in London, England, he met and married his wife Betty who was a Corporal serving in the Canadian Women's Army Corps in 1945. After the war, they made their first home in Calgary where their five children were born. They moved to Red Deer in 1961 and to Sherwood Park in 1971, where they have lived ever since. John spent his working life in the design and construction of commercial and industrial steel buildings throughout Western and Northern Canada. He was an active member of Rotary International for over 52 years, serving as President of the Rotary Club of Red Deer and as Charter President of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona. John was a fervent volunteer in his community and church. In addition, he was an avid craftsman, winemaker, golfer, fisherman, as well as hockey and sports enthusiast.
He leaves to remember him with love and wonderful memories, his wife of 67 years, Betty; children, Carolyn and Peter Good of Surrey, B.C., Allen and Heather Germain of Burlington, Ont., Ken and Sandy Germain of Edmonton, Eric and Karen Germain of Sherwood Park, Denise and Ron Charbonneau of Sherwood Park; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Eva, Jeanne and Dody; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Phillip and Roland.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 13 Brower Drive, Sherwood Park at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2013. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Cemetery. Thank you to the staff and residents of Sherwood Park Care Centre for their kind and compassionate care of John and his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John's name may be made to the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona for their Wheelchair Foundation, Operation Eyesight Projects and the John Germain Rotary Memorial Fund c/o Eric Germain, 99 Calico Drive, Sherwood Park, AB, T8A 5P3.
