John Hogan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2024.
John Marron Hogan, 71, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, was born on January 26, 1953, and passed away on April 24, 2024.

John was a man who sought adventure. As a young adult, he spent time exploring Mexico; couch surfing, making friends with the locals, sleeping on the beach, fishing, and scuba diving. The ocean always called to him. John worked as a firefighter on the beautiful island of Kwajalein, taking in all of the wonder it had to offer. After his assignment in Kwajalein ended, John found himself in the gorgeous country of Thailand, where he met his beloved wife, Upa.

John was known for his love of music, especially Cuban Jazz. He enjoyed reading and researching topics ranging from the latest scientific discoveries, global politics, history and even pop culture. This lent to his passion for chit chat and fierce debate. And in it all, John always ended up being right, much to the amusement and frustration of his friends and family.

John never met a stranger he didn't like. He loved learning about their life's journey, and was especially keen when he could learn new bad words and idioms of their native languages.

In his career, John graduated from nursing school in Los Angeles, CA, and went on to work at LA County Hospital where he quickly rose to the position of head nurse. While at county, he endured challenging times facing the city's rise of gang violence and navigating the emergence of the HIV epidemic. His true calling was as a Registered Nurse at West Valley Detention Center, where he found joy in observing the sociological aspects of the facility and happily stayed there for the rest of his career.

John is survived by his wife, Upa; son Nirun and his wife Xuo; daughter Diana and her partner Mike; daughter Christina and her husband Nick; son Kevin and his wife Melanie; and grandchildren Aiden, Serena, Cleo, and Leela. He was preceded in death by his father Paul Hogan, mother Martha Hogan, and sister Maurya Hogan.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the NAACP, ACLU, or Dementia Society of America in John's memory. John will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Play that funky music white boy.
