I was fortunate enough to be in the same teacher education class with John at Mcdonald College in 1951-52. We were a class of almost two hundred women and only about fifteen men. It was an agricultural college, and of course, we had to play against The Aggies, some of whom had played together for three years. We had to play, even though some of us, including John, had hardly ever been on skates. I was right defense, and John was goaler. I tried to pass the puck to the left defenseman, Bobby Pugh, but instead going behind the goal, my puck went in front of the net. John wasn't expecting anything like that. He was leaning on his stick. My puck hit his stick, and went into the wrong net! I had scored my first and only goal, but in the wrong net! Our coach, who was blind in one eye and could not therefore take part on the ice, stared at me with his one good eye, and motioned to me to sit on the bench, which I did for the rest of the season!
In spite of this, John was a good friend, even though we lost touch with one another as the years passed.
Many of us will miss him!

My condolences to Didi and the family. Mr Howes (who I was permitted to call "John" when we last met) taught me Sunday School at Valois United and English at John Rennie. He took us to see "The Ten Commandments" and the Montreal Repertory Theatre production of "Macbeth". He directed our productions of "Trial by Jury" and "Pirates of Penzance". He was a teacher who made a difference. Thank you Mr Howes. Rest in peace.

"Mr. Howes" was one of my favourite teachers at Beaconsfiekd HS. The first year he taught me he slammed my desk with a long ruler and told me I'd lived "a bed of roses" and to smarten up. It took me awhile to wake up and realize what he meant but I loved him from that point on. Thank you and RIP Mr Howes.
