John Lanier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2025.
Major John Lanier, Jr., age 75, passed away on February 23, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama. A proud native of Birmingham, he was born there on August 9, 1946, and remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life.

Major Lanier's life was marked by distinguished service, academic achievement, and a deep commitment to family and community. He graduated from Ullman High School in Birmingham before pursuing higher education in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from George Washington University and a Master of Science degree from American University. He furthered his military education at the prestigious Naval War College in Providence, Rhode Island.

A retired Major in the United States Air Force, John served his country with honor and dedication. Following his military career, he continued his public service as a federal government employee until his retirement in 2005. His leadership extended beyond his professional life into the community where he was known as a dedicated father, husband, and civic contributor.

John had a passion for history and genealogy that led him to become an active member of both a genealogy group and the Shadowlawn Historic Cemetery group. His love for history was not only academic but personal-he found joy in tracing family roots and preserving local heritage. He also traveled extensively across the country to play golf, combining his love for sport with exploration.

Faith played an important role in John's life. He was an active member of First Baptist Church Graymont in Birmingham, where he contributed to the spiritual and communal life of the congregation.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Betty S. Lanier; daughter, Dr. Patreece Lanier; son, John L. Lanier III; sisters Eleanor (Clarence) Nabors and Lillie Lanier; and sister-in-law Katherine (Richard) Chatman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and John Lanier Sr.

Major John Lanier Jr.'s legacy is one of service-to his nation, to his family, and to the community he cherished. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
