John Mack Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2022.
John Frederick Mack was born August 26, 1943 in Astoria, Oregon to Frederick and Bessie. He was a surprise baby. His three sisters were all more than 10 years older. His early memories were of living in a ramshackle house with no indoor plumbing in Knappa, Oregon surrounded by his dad's garden, their chickens, Twinkle the cow, a doll named Bugsy and a dog named Pepper. Before dying suddenly in a logging accident when John was just 6 years old, his dad taught him to fish and took him on weekly trips to the local library to pick out the books his dad would read to him each week.

In 1951, Bessie moved the two of them to a house on 116th St. in the Parkrose district of Portland, Oregon. His older sisters and their families soon moved into homes down the street. Growing up in Parkrose in the 1950s meant popping in and out of his friends' homes, reading comic books and building models in his basement bedroom, and late night walks to the Roseway Theatre to watch "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "Them." It was also a time when his worldview rapidly expanded. In 1955, Bessie decided the two of them needed to go to Europe to visit his sister Caroyl and her husband Vernon, who were stationed in France with the Army Corps of Engineers. He never knew how she afforded it or what motivated her, as a single mom, to sail across the ocean to post-War Europe. The trip through Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, France and Italy sparked a lifelong love of travel for John.

With the Vietnam War underway and prospects of the draft on the horizon, after graduating from Parkrose High School in 1961 and a year at Portland State University, John enrolled in the Army. He regretted not learning a language in high school so he signed up for the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California where he learned Russian and went on to become a 'spy' stationed in Japan and Korea during the war.

Upon returning home, John used the GI Bill to return to college. His dreams of becoming an orthodontist were thwarted by an incompatibility with college chemistry. But that failure led to his life's work: teaching. Teachers had been the people he looked up to his whole life. He could name nearly every teacher he ever had. After getting his master's in teaching from Lewis and Clark College, he ended up returning to Parkrose High School as a student teacher. He credited a traffic jam for his 28 year teaching career at Beaverton High School. One of his former junior high school teachers was stuck in traffic next to him and hollered out the window that the BHS English department had an opening and she would recommend John if he applied.

From 1972-1999, 'Mr. Mack' taught more than 7,000 students high school English, auto shop and film. He was known for being a somewhat unconventional teacher; stacking all the desks in the middle of the room to see how his students would react and dropping the occasional F-bomb. He loved teaching, but 'taking breaks' was what kept him energized throughout his career. In 1980, he spent a sabbatical year living in small villages in France with his family and writing for car magazines. He spent a summer in Korea in 1982 and was selected for a year-long Fullbright teaching exchange in the Netherlands in 1986. In 1992, he traveled to Israel and Poland to learn more about how to teach the literature of the Holocaust.

John continued to volunteer in the BHS auto shop program well into retirement. Fixing up cars was one of the great passions of his life. Over the years, he found and rehabbed two Lamborghinis, a couple of Lotus', Morris Minors, Mini Coopers, a Triumph, an MG, a Berkeley, Volkswagen camper buses, and a 1974 Citroen H-van-- as he put it, "a ridiculous amount of really neat cars."

Traveling 'down the road of life' was one of his greatest joys, whether driving 'Volksie bus' on the backroads of Oregon or navigating 'Cora' (the Citroen) through the hedgerows of French World War II battlefields. He treated retirement as one continuous traveling adventure and he and his wife Karen rarely spent more than 4-6 months at a stretch without finding a new destination to visit. He visited at least 40 countries and every continent except Antarctica. But his fondest memories were of the small moments; playing miniature golf with his grandson, watching the creek by his home roll by, going clamming with his son on the Oregon coast, enjoying his son-in-law's hot turkey sandwiches at Thanksgiving, and the satisfaction of rewiring an engine.

"I've had at least a couple of lives well-lived," he said. Despite a series of illnesses, he fought for every last moment and milestone with his family. He died on August 17, 2022 in Eugene, Oregon. He was 78. John is survived by his wife Karen and stepson, Josh Bell; his daughter Jenny and son, Jeff, and their families; and his sister Marjorie Patey. At his request, there will be no service. His family asks that in his memory, you take a moment to honor the teachers in your life.

This man taught me to think critically about film and messages (Film literature) and that has never left me. I still talk about it in regards to the films he chose for us to watch which wholeheartedly would not be allowed in todays public classroom. He made excellent choices in a career and in investing in his students. Life well lived. Thank you for crossing my path.

So very sorry to learn of Mr. Mack's passing. As one of his students at BHS, I have great memories of him. He was an awesome teacher, so enthusiastic and fun to learn from. We also really enjoyed his cars, and his knowledge of them. He was just such a great guy. My deepest condolences to the family.

Mr Mack was such a wonderful teacher. I have talked highly about him and his film lit class for years, so much so that my husband mentioned it last week when talking about some movies.

Former BHS student class of 1990. I loved Mr. Mack class. He was a greta teacher who always talked to his students but did not talk down to them. One of the only teachers I remember really liking in high school. RIP...

I met John on one of his best days after moving to Summer Oaks in Eugene. He seemed fully in charge though Karen worried that he was walking around without his walker. He was about to help her lift a water feature - 40#- to return it to the store. I know I would have enjoyed him as a next-door neighbor!

I truly loved having him as a teacher. It´s been 30 years since high school and he was one of my favorites. He made us think and showed great movies in film class like Lawrence of Arabia and Cool Hand Luke. My thoughts go out to his family.
I loved the colorful language he occasionally used, it made him seem like a real person we could all relate too

Mr. Mack was one of my favorite teachers at BHS. An incredible teacher who really understood how to keep high school students engaged. He shuffled desks, he did drop a swear word or two, he introduced us to LaserDiscs and he taught us how to have open discussions about the directors and films we watched. Movies that as kids we likely would never had watched, he made interesting and fun.
I was just thinking about his class last week, sorry to come across this sad news today.
Jenny & family, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Mr. Mack was one of my favorite teachers at Beaverton Highschool. He shared such a love of literature and I had the privilege of reading The Catcher in the Rye for the first time in his class. I could always tell he led an interesting life, but this obituary confirms it.

One day, while I was in his class they announced one of my classmates had committed suicide. This really jarred me. I was a sophomore, and there were only a few sophomores in this class but Mr. Mack noticed my distress and came over and asked how I was. I will always remember that. He was a real treasure as a teacher.

I am an instructional aide today that does reading interventions in elementary school. I hope to achieve his quality as an inspiration to kids.

He was the teacher for an English class I had in 10th grade (1996). He was funny - One day he brought in one of those desk bells that you push to ring, and when a student did something to bug him (talk without raising their hand, etc.), he'd walk over to them with the bell, ding it, and then walk back to the front of the classroom.

As we´re planning our trip to Germany this October I´ve been thinking of the many stories of traveling the European country side in the vw westy you kept in your friends barn while you were back in the states. I remember cub scouts at your house, with Jeff and all the Raleigh Park kids. Seeing the old Lamborghinis in the driveway. Then onto high school where shop class and movie lit were among the highest attended (at least for me) and most educational. My Thoughts are with the family and I´m sure your adventure will live on in the many lives you´ve touched.

Our deepest sympathy with John´s passing. He was a great auto shop teacher and took our son under his wing in shop class. He sparked our sons life long interest in cars, as well as, the ability to make his own repairs. Along with the friendship of his son Jeff.

In 1975, John drove me south from Portland to Diamond Lake and Mt. Thielsen where I caught the Pacific Crest Trail for a backpack up to the Columbia Gorge. For the past three weeks I´ve been reviewing my notes and photos from that long ago journey and thinking about John´s role in it. To learn of his death in today´s Oregonian stunned me.
We met over 50 years ago when he did his student teaching at Parkrose High School where I was a member of the English department. Similar ages and interests led to a short but valued friendship, culminating some years later when our families met on Mt. Hood to go canoeing on Frog Lake. My wife and children still talk about the masses of frogs´ eggs over which we drifted.
Drifting, too, were his and my careers, but positive memories remain. My life is richer because I knew John.

I will always remember John's ability to be "studious" and fun at the same time. I share his love of exploring cultures, having been to 80 countries myself, and as I'm sure John said many times: "Not a moment to regret."

Karen, he'll be traveling with you as you continue your journey to expand your horizons. Much love to you as you process and heal and travel the world . . . Janice

My deepest memory of Mr. Mack is his love of cars, and his amazing garage at the house he lived at in SW Portland when Jenny and Jeff were little. My sister and I were in awe of all the amazing, unique cars! We we´re also in awe of the Mack´s treehouse! I also remember the teacher exchange experience, what an awesome opportunity for Mr. Mack and family to experience another culture and place. Sending my condolences to Jenny, Jeff, and Mr. Mack´s entire family. I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Mack will live on through his life well lived and all of the memories he created with you and the lives he touched through teaching.
