John Maidens Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Jan. 22, 2008.
MAIDENS John Henry Chief Superintendent (ret'd) Jack Maidens, born December 3, 1929 in Belleville Ontario, passed away with dignity, courage and sense of humour still intact, on January 14, 2008, following a three month struggle with a form of bone marrow cancer and endocarditis. Jack grew up in Trenton Ontario, where he was a star athlete in track and field, basketball, football and softball. In later years, sailing, fishing and golf replaced these activities, but the recreational softball continued until his retirement. Throughout his life he was a 'Mr. Fix-it" an insatiable reader, an avid bridge player and a lover of music. Jack spent the first three years after his Regina R.C.M.P. training in Aklavik and Tuktoyuktuk, N.W.T. and was subsequently posted to Edmonton, Ottawa - three separate times - Regina, Victoria, Terrace, Yorkton and finally Vancouver, where he retired as Officer in Charge of Administration and Personnel for E Division (B.C.). Jack will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his wife of 55 years Margaret (Maitland) and by his five children - Michael (Deborah) Maidens, Laurie (Gerry) Bonsal, Sally (Ash) Megalli, Jeff (Feiza) Maidens and youngest daughter, Peggy Maidens and by his twelve grandchildren, of whom he was so proud. He is also survived by his sisters Phyllis (Abner- dec.) Leavey, Dorothy (Gord - dec.) Webb, Mary (Roland) Pouliot, Nancy (Ross) Vogan , brother-in-law, Carson Wilkie, his brother-in-law Mac (Emily) Maitland and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Wilkie. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses of Delta Hospital for their excellent care and compassion - with special thanks to Dr. Sylvia Henderson and Dr. Ljilyana Kordick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delta Hospital Foundation, 5800 Mountain View Blvd. Delta, BC V4K 3V6 or the Delta Hospice Society Building Fund, PO Box 19036, Delta, BC V4L 2P8 or to a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Jack's life will be held on Wednesday, January 30th at 2:00 p.m. at Tsawwassen United Church, 693 53 St. in Tsawwassen, B.C. Delta Funeral Home 604-946-6040

Dear Marg and the kids,

Seems like only yesterday the house next door to ours filled up with a station-wagon full of Maidens. But it was what? More than THREE decades ago? So many memories as neighbours and friends… Jack could always bring a smile.

My children and I send you our very warmest thoughts and hugs as we all bid a fond farewell to a mighty man. May you rest in peace Jack… you will be missed.

Love, Mary and the kids
