John March Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 16, 2024.
On a quiet winters eve, surrounded by his family, John Christopher March quietly succumbed to interstitial lung disease. He was a gardener, a craftsman, an artist, a father, a friend, a lover and willing partner. He was 82.

Born in Middletown, New York, John attended The Storm King School, Rutgers University and later the University of Denver. He was a tradesman in tile and an artisan in construction. He forged his path, a builder of both the mundane and the majestic.

John joined the Peace Corps in 1964 eluding the Vietnam war, taught English in Tunisia, and traveled northern Africa on his BSA motorcycle. A builder of homes and family, from Santa Fe to Boulder, his story was set in ceramic and stone during the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Known for his wizardry in his shop and his practical knowledge, John enjoyed helping friends by offering unique insight and guidance into any project. He was gifted in mechanics, wood and metal work. He loved maintaining old tools and vehicles, a journey of self-enlightenment through the physical. John was also a bee keeper and a friend of many pets, he nurtured spirits akin to his own.

John's presence radiated warmth, wit and daring, eyes alight with mischievous sparks and unfathomable fathoms. John was dependable, loving, direct and fierce. He never intentionally wronged anyone. A spiritual man, he led a life with connections deep and convoluted-the tenderness and turmoil of love, of being his, held both boon and bane. His was an adventure in the everyday.

Survived by his wife Cecily Dell; his children, Jacob, Maria, and Christopher; his grandchildren, Eva, Isaiah, Charlie and Henry; his friend and coparent Judy, and his sisters, Sylvia, Sophia, and Prita-all bearers of his legacy. He was preceded in death by his mother Louise, his father Walter, and his brother George.

Rest now, John, the world is more beautiful having had you in it. You are loved, and you will be missed.

I am very saddened by John's passing. My deepest condolences to John's family and friends. We only saw each other a few times at family gatherings, but we always had great talks and I was amazed by his wide range of interests and knowledge and his humor. He was a very special person and I feel fortunate to have known him.
