John McCarter Obituary

John T. McCarter, Sr., passed peacefully on May 11, 2017 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his father, John McCarter and mother, Elizabeth Ida Dewees McCarter of Conshohocken, PA, his wife of 53 years, Jean Kratz McCarter, daughter, Susan McCarter and a brother, Jim McCarter.

He is survived by his wife of 4 years, Kay Price Witherspoon McCarter; two daughters, Peggy Jean McCarter and husband, Dr. Jim Dutton of Hendersonville, NC, Dr. Tamara Estes Savage and husband, Dr. Jeffery Savage of Willard, NC; son, John T. McCarter, Jr. and wife Debbie McCarter of Spring Island, SC. Also, John is survived by Sara Jameson, his granddaughter who is mother to his 3 great-grandchildren, Celeste, Will, and Stella. Tamara is mother of grandson, Seth and granddaughter, Elise.

Much loved by his step-children, include 3 sons, Allen Carswell and wife Kim, James Carswell and wife Dana, Jimmy Carswell and wife Heather, step-daughter, Glenda C. Pitts and husband Brian, nine step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.

John was a graduate of the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades. He served in the Navy in both WWII and the Korean Conflict. After being hired by Synthetics Finishing of Philadelphia, he was sent to Hickory where he established and operated four plants. He was honored by the owners at retirement by naming the main office and plant after him.

John was dedicated to the Lion's Club. He was in the first Lion's Club in this area. He served in many capacities from club leadership positions to zone and local projects.

Our families wish to thank the caring staff, nurses and CNAs of Bayada and Hospice of Hickory.
