John E. Morris III, Esq., 76, of Dallas, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Kingston, he was the son of the late John E. Jr. and Katherine McCrea Morris. He was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary, Brown University and the Dickinson School of Law.

Attorney Morris served in the U.S. Air Force with the Office of the Judge Advocate General as a captain in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

John spent his entire legal career in the general practice of law, except for a five-year period during which he served as general counsel and executive vice president of the Nesbitt Memorial Hospital and the Wyoming Valley Health Care System.

John served on many boards and community organizations, including the Board of Directors of the Wilkes-Barre Family Y.M.C.A., serving as a three-term president of the board; the Board of Directors of the Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis and the Nesbitt Memorial Hospital; various volunteer positions with the United Way of Wyoming Valley; and was a member of the Budget Committee of the Wilkes-Barre Law & Library Association. John was a past post commander of the Wilkes-Barre American Legion. He also served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Oak Lawn Cemetery Association.

John was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame of Wyoming Seminary, Brown University, and the Pennsylvania-Luzerne County Chapter for his career swimming achievements in both high school and college.

Hunting and fishing were a very important part of his life. John belonged to the Clemo Hunting and Fishing Club and the Lower Toby Sportsman's Club.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was a sister, Jane M. Morris, in January.

Surviving are his sons, John E. Morris IV and wife, Brenda, Dallas; and Mark E. Morris and wife, Ashley, Kingston Township; daughter, Gail A. Morris, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, Andrew, Justin, Emmersyn, Everleigh, Sophia and Michael; former wife, Claire P. Morris; and his beloved German Shorthaired Pointer, Dina.

The Morris family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA, 40 W. Northampton St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.

To the John Morris Family:
I swam with Johnny for 4 years at Brown University. We were also in the same fraternity so we had many experiences together. I last saw him at our 50th college reunion five years ago. I did not learn about his passing until September 2016 so am now just signing the guest book. If you see Johnny inside the Pearly Gates, ask him about our experience at Dartmouth's Winter Weekend after we defeated Dartmouth in swimming. It's a good/funny story. I'll miss him greatly. To the family of John Morris lll
I am so sorry for your loss and mine. I'll miss John very much.
I met John at the Y and we became gym buddies. I saw him almost every day at the Y. John liked to wear shirts that were given to him as gifts. Well, one of his favorite shirts was one from an auto mechanic. So for the longest time, I assumed that John owned a garage and was an auto mechanic
Our Y members soon corrected me on that assumption and I got to know John and the wonderful man that he was. Mechanic or attorney , how blessed I feel to have known him.
God Bless You All.

Sorrowfully,

Joanie Angeli, Y Staff

To the Morris Family
My family and I offer our prayers to you at the passing of John . He was a great lawyer, and more importantly a dear friend. He was a mentor to me and numerous other lawyers as we started our legal journey, and we continued to look to him for advice throughout our careers. His humor and friendship made us realize what was really important in life. He knew that. John was a wonderful man and he will truly be missed by all of us that knew him well and the entire legal community. Please accept my condolences and tribute to a wonderful and decent man. May he rest in peace.

John was a good man and a good lawyer. He would probably though, be proudest of being a good fly fisherman.

I've known John and Jane for over 70 years.
Their influence on my life was deeply ingrained from childhood through now. I'm part of the Newville McCrea clan/visits each summer were a highlight of mine. Cousin stuff burned into my heart. Will miss
But soon unite with Jane and John to rehash the past and renew! Loving thoughts always,
