John Mounger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 25 to May 26, 2008.
John Mounger, pastor, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 23, 2008, after a long battle with prostate cancer. A loving father, grandfather and lifelong resident of Lettsworth, John was born on Nov. 26, 1945. He graduated from LSU in 1969 and spent many years farming. He graduated from the Minister Training Institute in 1995 and established Prayer Lake Ministry, a prayer retreat center and a place of restoration and communication with God in Lettsworth. It was John's promise to the Lord to "make it hard to go to hell from Lettsworth" and he proceeded to tell everyone he ran into about the saving grace of Jesus. He loved the Lord with all his heart and shared that love with all around Him. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joy New Mounger; three children and their spouses, Tara and John Mounger, Robin and Scott Jourdan and Marcus and Dr. Aimee Russo- Mounger; seven grandchildren, Grant Jourdan, Trent Jourdan, KatieClaire Mounger, Spencer Mounger, Megan Jourdan, SarahGrace Mounger and Scout Mounger; and scores of people that John called family. He is also survived by his brothers and sister-in-law, Russell and Kathleen Mounger and Price Mounger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Inell and A.R. "Buddy" Mounger. Service at Bethany World Prayer Center, North Campus, Baker, on Tuesday, May 27, at 11 a.m., conducted by Larry Stockstill, pastor, and Rod Aguillard, pastor. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Reception following the service in the New Gym at Bethany. Burial at 4 pm at Prayer Lake Cemetery. Graveside services will be held by Larry Stockstill and Dr. David Remedios, pastors. In lieu of flowers please send donations to: Prayer Lake Ministry or Alpha Foundation, 3124 Hwy 971, Lettsworth, LA 70753. Dear Joy and family, Through your heartfelt emails, I felt like I was along side of you and John. Though I could not physically be there, please know that you were always in my thoughts and prayers. God has truly blessed you by giving you such a strong sense of His presence and the knowledge of the purpose that He wanted you and John to fulfill. I have only been to Prayer Lake a few times, but they were memorable to me because of you and John and the special love you shared with each other. It overflowed with grace to touch everyone who came in contact with you. Prayer Lake was truly a place to find "rest in the Lord". You and John made it that way with His divine guidance and your trust in Him and lots of hard work. I love you and will continue to pray for you and the family.

Their is a story about David praying for his infant son who layed at death's door II Sam 12:15-23. Let these passages comfort you.

Joy,
John was a brother in the Lord as well as a mentor to me. The legacies of Prayer Lake Ministries and Alpha Foundation are reminescent of his selfless love and care for the Body of Christ and his own family. He has gone on to his great reward where there is no more pain or tears. My love and deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Joy,
I was fortunate to have John as a suite mate at Southeastern in the '60s. I always enjoyed his sense of humor and friendship. I am glad to see from the comments that so many people held him in such high regard. I have good memories of him (including a trip we took to Mexico one summer), and I know you have many more that comfort you now.

Joy and Family -

My heart is so heavy tonight after hearing of Johnny's passing. How he touched my life with his quite inner strength will remain with me, forever. I did not know until tonight that Johnny is now with the Lord. I would have been at the service had I known. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and all your beautiful family. I pray that God will wrap His arms around you and give you peace knowing "Well done, thy good and faithful servant" is how God greeted Johnny.
I love you.........

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the belovèd's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

What can I say? I don't know that words can express what John has meant to my life. I can say with all that I am "Thank You For Giving To The Lord". My relationship with Christ, my life, my marriage have all been effected by the life of my precious friend John. We will miss him until we meet again.

This message is for Joy and the entire Mounger family: Joy, I remember the first time I ever went to Prayer Lake. All I knew is that my friend and yours, Bunny Jumonville told me she had made arrangements for me to go to this "place" and that it would be a good thing for me. I was depressed and lost. For some strange reason, I went, in driving rain, by myself, and Bunny was right. It was a good place for me. God delivered me and touched me and brought me closer to Him. That "place" I went was Prayer Lake. And Bunny was right: I have never ever been the same. Joy, you and Johnny took me under wing, and in your own way, loved me to life... Not only have you shown me how to live, but Johnny has shown us all, how to die. He never gave up on his dream, The Alpha Foundation.
Joy, I love you and your family so much. I stand with you, Johnny, and your entire family for The Alpha Foundation. My love and prayers are with all of you forever... Love, Emma

What fond memories we all have of John. Few in Lettsworth, could have imagined such a future for this powerful man of God. John exploits against the forces of evil were only mangnified by his own brand of supreme self-confidence in His Lord.
We pray for the Lord to give you courage and strength Joy as you continue striving to fulfill God's purpose for Prayer Lake.

Even though I had never met Brother John, I was encouraged by his strength and blessed by the reports of his valiant stand during the illness. May the God of all Comfort be especially close to you, Joy, and the entire family at this time. While we all know that Brother John is with the Lord and his suffering is over, it is sad to lose such a wonderful man of God. I will not be able to attend the service tomorrow, but my prayers are with you. May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you, may the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His peace.

Dearest Mounger Family,

Our prayers are with you and our love and respect for the wonderful servant of the Lord and friend will always remain in our hearts forever. Mr. John was such an inspiration to us and we will always remember all he gave for the kingdom. He was truly an image of God. His visions and dreams that were made reality is proof to us all that once God calls you He will equip you for every good work. Mr. John was in the race and he finished with the torch in his outstretched hand expecting us all to take hold of it and carry on.
We love you!

We are so sad to hear about the passing of our friend and brother, Johnny. Johnny was a light to Innis and everywhere he went. We immediately thought of the time that he helped our son, Seth build a birdhouse at Prayer Lake and all of the times we were welcomed in his home as we were leaving for the mission field and when we would come home to visit. I remember when Johnny ministered to my mother in his living room. All of our kids remember Mr. Johnny. Joy, we love you all very much and we are so sorry for this great loss. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, in Jesus,

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Johnny for years. Joy, I saw you and Johnny a couple of months ago. We talked for a while and it was really hard to stop talking to him and you. I know he was a man of God. We talked about ya'll visiting our church in Batchelor. He wanted to come when we had a "Friend Day" where we always have good food prepared by the Carroll's and others. I heard not long after that he had taken a turn for the worse. I have been out of town--my husband and I were getting away for our 39th. anniversary. You know, this morning, May 25, 2008, I had Johnny Mounger in my thoughts. I was wondering how he was doing. When I got back home, I checked the Obits and was saddened to see his name there. (I always knew him by Johnny). I know I will not be able to make it to his services, but ya'll are in my thoughts. May God bless you and yours......
