John POOLE Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Oct. 25 to Oct. 26, 2009.

POOLE John Wilson (Jack) O.C., O.B.C., B.Sc. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John W. (Jack) Poole on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the age of 76. He will be missed and forever remembered by his loving wife Darlene, his daughters Gwen (Sol), Ann (Lanny), Kelly-Jill (Nick), Judy (Mark), stepson Ryan (Karrie); his grandchildren Kristi, Kelly, Katie, Erin, Jade, Blake, Kristi and Quinn; his great-granddaughters Sierra and Jessica. Jack had a long and prestigious career as one of the country's leading real estate developers, first with Daon Development Corporation and then Concert Properties Ltd. After retirement, he was asked and agreed to head the Bid Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Canada won the Bid to host the Olympic games and Jack remained as Chairman of the VANOC Board up to his death. He was a modest man who did not seek honours although many came his way including the Order of Canada, the Order of British Columbia, the Queen's Jubilee Medal and the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame Sportsman of the Year. Jack has left us with wonderful memories. He was a real life hero and was truly an inspiring example of how to live life. He saw the Olympic flame lit as his flame of life diminished. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard Street, in Vancouver, BC.

It has been my good fortune to have known Jack for 50 years. From Edmonton and Calgary, to Prince George, Mackenzie and Fraser Lake, to Vancouver we remained in contact and shared many good times.

The most enduring qualities that Jack possessed were style and class in everything that he did.

My sincerest sympathies to his family.

My condolences go out to the family of Jack Poole. On the few occassions that l met him, he was just an ordinary man, never boasting of his achievements
content to visit with family and friends. He never forgot his roots.

As a professional successful business woman I owe a lot of my right path to Jack. I worked with Daon Developments for a number of years and he taught me the structure of goals, being level headed and most of all the will to succeed.

I will celebrate his life forever and feel honored that he was a part of my lifes path.

With sincere sympathy.

It was widely know that Jack was a man of his word and that he was bound by his word and not by what might later be written.

As Daon's auditor, I met Jack one morning during the financial restructuring of Daon in the early 1980's. He seemed troubled. When I asked why, he said he had just received a written offer for one of the company's buildings. Since it was a good offer, I asked him what was the problem? He said that the night before he had accepted a lesser offer which had not yet been written but he shook hands on it. (i.e. he had given his word). Jack honoured his handshake deal and turned down the written offer. Jack was always a man of his word!

Gwen, Ann, Jill and Judy (Hoss) - We have wonderful memories of your dad and growing up in Calgary with all of you. It's hard to lose a dad and our hearts are with you. Two years ago when our dad (Fred Neville) was in hospital, as was your dad, he phoned just as dad was being transferred to another hospital. When he found out the EMS were there with the stretcher beside dad and waiting, the two of them made a game of trying to see how long they could make the paramedics wait. By the time Dad hung up, he had tears rolling down his face from laughter - a joy to behold as dad was in his last days. Those two together - well, the stories could go forever. Love to you all and your mom from Joan and Janice.
