John William Pye, 68, died unexpectedly at his home in Abington on June 29, 2016. John was the son of the late William and Caroline (Chase) Pye. He was the brother of James and his wife Grace of Sandwich; his sisters, Martha Mulholland of Abington and Ann Pye of South Weymouth. John was the loving uncle of Suzanne Lockwood and her husband Steven, Matthew Mulholland IV and his wife Stacey, Cyndi Earle, and Mark Collins. He is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was an antiquarian, a rare book dealer, specializing in Egyptology, and a scholar. John was born and raised in South Weymouth. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., and Saint John's Seminary in Boston. He had served on the Board of Trustees for the Watkinson Library at Trinity College for many years. John worked in several group homes before settling into his true passion, books. He had authored several bibliographies and published numerous articles on various Ancient Egyptian topics. He also enjoyed many hobbies including coin and stamp collecting. A memorial service will be held to honor John, Saturday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at All Saint's Episcopal Church, 44 Park Ave., Whitman. Today, July 2024, finds the Whitney Family very much enjoying our memories and joys when we spent time with our dear, dear friend John Pye. The 3 children, now adults, would clap when they were little--and we told them John Pye was coming for dinner. They loved seeing John pull into the driveway and would run to the front door. What a friend, what a brilliant man, what a dedicated Egyptologist. I met John at the Museum of Fine Arts many decades ago and we will ALWAYS remember John's participation in our lives. Much love to John, still. --Betsey Whitney and Family

We remember John on the fourth anniversary of his passing. He had a unique outlook on life, he gave us lots of laughs. In particular was a Veterans Day Weekend to LL Bean in Freeport, Maine - it was extremely crowded & John blurted out this is just rampant consumerism and I reminded him the he sold rare books. John, Ron and I had a good laugh!

I bought several Egypt-related books and prints from John in the 1990's -- all of which I still have -- and met him once at the annual Chicago antiquarian book fair. This was pre-internet when we communicated via telephone and snail mail. On my own initiative I also remember scouring several bookstores in Chicago searching for rare books that he might be able to buy and resell. John was always kind and friendly and fair and professional to me. May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace Amen.
